GIRL AND TWO MEN IN
BOMBING FIGHT CAUGHT
Chicago, Nov. 27. (A. P.)
Two men and a girl were captured
and another man was thought to
have been killed when scoree of
policemen ambushed a gang Just
as they exploded a bomb which
wrecked a hardware store.
Miss Lee McClellan of Colum
bus, Ohio, Fred WalmqulBt and
Joseph Avengi were arrested. The
men were shot about the head, in
the chase that followed the ex
plosion. The supposed dead man
was believed thrown from the
bombers automobile before it was
overtaken by pursuing detective
squads.

Two men, one a policeman, were
killed and two others, including a
policeman, were wounded In a
south side tobacco shop early to
day lu a shooting affray in which
one of four assailants was describ
ed by the wounded policeman as
Marty Dark in, fugitive police slay
er. The policemen, had been spend
ing the lust five .nights in the
shop. Shortly after midnight while
they were talking to five loungers
in the shop the quartet entered
and the 'Shooting began. It was
thought the policemen had been
assigned to the shop on a tip that
Durkin might visit there.
James Carroll, policeman, and
Ben Custer, a taxi-driver, were
killed; James Henry, the other po
liceman, probably fatally wounded
and tius Soeldner, a lounger,
slightly Injured. Henry said Dur
kin was one of the men.
The shop Is located in an area
known as the habitat of gangsters
and Is not far from the flat where
Durkin escaped a police trap after
killing a detctclve sergeant, near
ly a month ago.
Detective Chief Shoemaker, after
questioning witnesses who saw the
killerB escape, said be doubted
that Durkin led them. He admit
ted the policemen had been sent
to the shop to anticipate Durkin

FIRST THANKSGIVING
PROCLAMATION IN 1777
York, Pa.. Nov. 27. (A. P.)
Although the first observance of
Thanksgiving day in America is
credited to the Pilgrims in 1621,
York today claims the honor of
being the birthplace of tho first
national Thanksgiving proem
mation. The proclamation, issued
In 1777, wae a product of the
meeting of the Continental con
gress in New York from Septem
ber 30, 1777, to June 27, 1778.
Shortly after the congress as
sembled here, news of the surren
der of General Burgoyne reached
the members. On October 31
President Laurenco appointed
Richard Henry -Lee of Virginia,
Samuel Adams of Massachusetts
and General Roberdeau of Penn
sylvania a committee to draft a
national proclamation of Thanks
giving.- The document was writ
ten by "Lee and on November 1,
