mysteriously slain .in Hillside, N. J. Clark's wife and Joseph Cowen, an admirer,
were held for questioning. A bracelet in Cowen's possession contained a picture of

pass, where they will again
tempt to put the new snow motor
over the road. Mechanical trouble
has been blamed for the unsuccess
ful attempts of the motor to nego
tiate the puss so far.

the pass has been repaired and
taken back to Bend, according to
word here.
The new snow motor, contrary
to general belief, will not open the
pass for cars, even though success
ful, but will Itself go over the
snow carrying passengers.

Rumble, 84, Wallowa bounty pio
neer and veteran of the Civil war,
died at his home at Joseph, Or.,
Tuesday. Ho was born in Wash
ington county, Iowa, In 1842. and
came to Joseph in 1880. He was
appointed United States commis
sioner in 1895. He served on a
commission which separated Wal
lowa county from Union county,
Ho also Bervcd ae postmaster at
Joseph and as councilman. Dur
ing the Civil war he was a mem
her of the Fourth Iowa cavalry,
company D. He enlisted in 1861.

Sift together the flour, lalt,' bating ponder, spices and
sugar in a large mixing bowl. Combine Snowdrift, milk,
and eggs in a small mixing bowl and beat well. Combine
two mixtures. Dissolve soda in boiling water and beat
well in batter. Pour into greased and floured square cake
pans. Bake for 30 mioutes in ovea at 400 degrees F. Turn
out on cake rack to cool and cover with confectioner's
Icing (1 cup powdered sugar, with enough boiling water ,
to make a piste, and flavor to taste). 1 cup raisins and ;
H cup outs may be added to this batter if desired. At
4,000 feet (or over) altitude reduce the lugai to H cup
and the baking powder to one teaspoon.
