London, Nov. 2. (A. P.) The
deposition of the Sbah of Persia
by the Persian national assembly
"for the sake of the national wel
fare' caused no surprise here,
but the action of the Mejliss on
Saturday, In the overthrowing of
the dynasty, had not been ex
pected. The succession of some
member of the family frequently
had been suggested when reports
of the impending dethronement
of Sultan Ahmed Mirza, the 27
year old Shah, were current.
Some doubt Is expressed as to
whether the abolition of the
dynasty represents the feeling
Among the Persians, who are said
to have the theoretical conception
that the monarchy was strong.
The voice of the people, it is
thought here, will probably be
heard on this point as soon as
elections to the announced con
stituent assembly begin. Much,
however, seems likely to depend
on Premier Heza Khan, who Is re
garded as not a strong man, but
possessed both of strategy and of
statecraft. He will likely sound
public opinion respecting the form
of the new government. It Is said
he can aTford to do this, as it Is
virtually certain be will retain all
roal power in Persia in any case.
There is a rumor in London that
Rcza has seized the throne him
self, but this cannot be confirmed.
A dispatch to the Morning Post
from Teheran, the Peraian capital,
reports that the former crown
prince left the city on Saturday
for Paris accompanied by a de
tachment of soldiers. The dis
patch adds that everything was
quiet and that the city was to be
Illuminated for three nights as a
sign of rejoicing.
Rcza Klmn has risen from an
humblo station. He formerly was
a groom and subsequently a troop
er In the Persian Cossacks. II"1
suddenly gained prominence,
when In 1921, he headed n mili
tary revolt which overthrew the
government. Reza then became
war minister and in 1923 premier.
Ho declared himself in favor of n
republic but wns thwarted in his
efforts to establish one by the op
position of the priests.

since that time and the virtual
dictator, modeling his condust in
example of Mustapiia Kemal
Paflha, president of Turkey.
Early In 1925, he Induced the na
tional assembly to appoint him
commander in chief of the army.
The Morning Post nays the
shah recently determined to re
turn to Persia from his unlimited
vacation in Europe and engaged a
suit on n liner sailing for Persia
but that he hns cancelled his arrangements.

The vernacular newspapers are
dilating today on the serious row
between the finance and the navy
departments over the apparent re
fusal of the finance minister to
approve an appropriation of 23,
000,000 yen for the replacement of
auxiliary naval veseele in the next
five years.
The finance minister contends
that economic influences make
such a huge appropriation Impos
sible, but navy hcude declare the

the replacement program.

FIRE LOSSES IN
STATE DURING
A statement Issued by State
Forester F. A. Elliott shows that
fires and fire loasee within- the
state on lands coming under the
jurisdiction of his office were far
less than last year, and this In
spite of the fact that a long ex
tended dry period made conditions
exceedingry favorable for disas
trous fires. A total of 840 fires
were suppressed by the field crew
this year us against 1888 In 1924.
Lightning Is credited with the
greatest number, 186 In all. Incen
diarism 1b Becosd with 164 and
smokers third with 107. One note
worthy feature ot fire causes la the
falling off In the number of hunter
fires. Only 24 are credited to this
cause and a number ot them were
caused by hunters who were In
the woods before the season open
ed. The small numbor Is unques
tionably due to the changing of

from AugUBt 20 to September 10,
thereby terving to keep hunters
out of the woods during what is
ordinarily a bad (ire period," said
the forester.
The total area burned over Is
placed at 61,144 acres, resulting In

of timber, valued at approximately

fered a loss of $85,692, due to fires
