That God should "have our firat
and beat" was the statement made
by Rev. Fred C. Taylor, pastor of
the First Methodist church, speak
ing before his congregation Sun
day mornlne. "God's First Fruits'
was the subject of the sermon. The
message found a basis In tho words
of scripture, "Honor the Lord with
the first fruits of all thine In
crease. In the day that thou goest
Into sanctuary, thou shaft offer tho
firstfrults of nil things."
"The sficredncsa of the first
fruits of fruits and grains," said
Kev, Mr. Taylor, "of flocks and
herds, was a law In tho Hebrew
religion and was practiced by oth
er nations and tribes as well. In
tho morning of human history Abel
brought the firstlings of his flock
as an offering to God nnd was ac
cepted. Moses wrote tho law of
tho firstfrults ns a part of the
Jewish feast of the -Bentacost.
Hezeklah restored Us practice In
Ills great work of reform, Solomon
required it from tho people in
their temple worship. The Import
of It was that God was to bo hon
ored as tho giver of all temporal
blessings by bringing to His wor
ship the firstfrults of all things.
"In the practice of Christian j
stewardship wo are to give God ,
our firstfrults of personality and
possessions. Jesus taught this,
truth wher. He said, 'Seek first the I
kingdom of God,' and 'Thou shalt
love the Lord thy God with all
thine heart. The worship and ser
vice of God Is to have a primary
place In life. In faith, love, and
devotion, God Is to have our. first
and best.
"This principle might be applied
to the church today, Jesus called
tho church his father's house, and
wo have called it God's holy temple
yet we do not always make It first
In our interest and our devotion.
What a sad commentary on our
Christian consistency It is, when
we neglect our church building and
allow It to become unsightly and
unmodern. If tho church Is the
biggest Institution, and religion the
biggest business, It should keep
pneo with all other Institutions In
- our nation, and bo made as attrac
tive and effective and as beautiful
as our banks, stores, schools, tem
ples and homes.
"In tho matter of time, God
wants our firstfrults. While nil
time and all forms of honest toil
may bo called sacred, yet God was
commanded that one day In seven
shall be kepi holy unto Him. The
tomptatlon may come to ubo all
our time for our homes, society,
business and pleasure and neglect
devoting somo time to prayer, wor
ship, Itlbltt Btudy and Christian
work. To such the Master spoke,
What shall It profit a man to gain
the whole .world and loso his own
soul?'
"In the stewardship of our sub
stance God wants our firstfrults.
Our money represents our person
ality in energy expended In labor.
Tho offertory In our church wor
ship should bb as religious and
spiritual as tho prayer and the ser
mon. When God requires us to
bring the firstfrults of all things
na an1 offering, Ho does not want
us to make It a collection of life's
leavings. God gives His best to us
In both material and spiritual bless
lngs. He gave his only begotten
son for us who Is called In tho
Bible 'tho firstfrults of tho resur
rection.' "Our best Is none too good for
God.'

off for another day. Premier
Palnlevo and his colleagues ad
journed this morning without tak
ing final decision on tho financial
situation and the convocation of a
cabinet council with President
Doumorguo was postponed until
tomorrow.
Earlier the conviction had pre
vailed In political circles that noth
ing short of a miracle could pro
vent a ministerial crisis In France.
Minister of Finance Caillaux wan
sticking to his financial guns. He
would not consent to a levy on cap
Hal, desired by a majority of his
colleagues, and he refused to re
sign his portfolio until dofeatod
by a vote In parliament.
M. Caillaux In hie grim fighting
spirit, declared In an address bo-
fore the electors In Ids depart
ment of tho Sartho yesterday "I
expect fresh crowns ot tnorns on
my still bleeding brow," and said
ho was determined to battle to the
bitter eiift against tho capital levy,
favored, he asserted, by "powerful

way for Premier Painleve to elim
inate his finance minister is to
resign with all his ministers. Thon,
as the premier would not have
been beaten by a voto In the cham
ber of deputies, president Dou mor
gue, In accordance with usage,
would call upon Palnlevo to form
another cabinet which he could do
without giving M. Caillaux a port
folio, himself either taking tho
ministry of finance or giving It to
Louis Loucheur or somo other man
