ances at the Gaiety theater, New

with Thomas Jefferson, who was
chosen by the late Frank Bacon
himself just before his death. In
the role for which Bacon believed

"Llghtnln" has the west for Its
setting, and gains Its title from Its
leading character, Llghtnln' Bill
Jones, so-called because he Is the
antithesis of speed. He Is a tip
pler, a quaint, old .rural know-lt-
ail, beside whom the most veteran
globe trotter Is an Infant In so
phistication. He was "the first
man to enlist" In the Civil Var,
and all but declared war and made
tho peace for Lincoln. To hear
him tell about It, he has been an
engineer, judge, bee farmer, miner,
cattle man, big game hunter, ex
plorer, soldier, and general adven
turer, who can top off any series
of tall stories with a taller one
from his own experience. All In
nil, he le as lovable an old liar
as could be conceivod.
But Llghtnln' Isn't reallv had at
heart, and he has a healthy res
pect for 'Mother', as he calls his

days of Jefferson's Rip Van Winkle
has the stage witnessed such a
sympathetic character as IJghtnln'.

laugh with the eccentrlo old fellow
who is so human and lovable, even
