cial.) The chicken thief which
has been playing so much havoc in
the poultry yons on Paradise road
during the past few days was
brought to the ground sund,i-
when Mrs, 0. Hatteberg wont
a-trapping. ' A mink waa the
catch. If this mink was lonely
fellow or If he had companions
poultry owners in the neighbor
hood are waging to diecover.
During the past week a number
of hens have been found dead Jn
the poultry yards. At first it was
thought that dogs were doing the
damage. A watch was kept and u
mink was discovered In the act
Sunday raorn'tg. A short time aftev
the discovery, tho culprit waa a
captive. Reports from two poul
try owners alone Sunday morning
showed a ioss of 29 hens Suturday
night.

ASK INCREASE
I
An allowance for the Salem fire
department sufficient to provide
additional equipment and housing
facilities is asked in the prelim
J nary estimate that has been made
by Fire Chief Hutton and Alder
man W. H, Dancy, chairman of
the fire and water committee of
the council. The tentative
amount asked is $59,130, which
is an Increase of $17,101 over
that made last year for 1925.
Additional salaries that are
contemplated accounts for most of
the increase asked, four addition
al men being asked ,by Mr. Dancy
This brings tho amount wanted
for salaries up to $55,0(i0, as
against $37,560 for the present
year..
Dancy also asks that provision
be made for a one-story hollow
tilo building on city property on
Bast Ferry street, estimated to
cost $5,000. This would house a
pumper and a chemical engine.
Chief Hutton also wants addition
