The business oX the conference bad been formally closed on Saturday leaving Sunday for the more quiet devotional services. A number of the delegates left Saturday for their homes as far away as Mon tana and Idaho. The morning service was the anniversary, sermon, given by In vitation by Dr. Fred C. Taylor, pastor of the First Church. He stated briefly some of the out standing achievements of the great international organization; Its founding In 1 809, Its recogni tion by the church fn 1872, Its incorporation In 1884. It has rais ed mora than $30,000,000 for mis sions; It now has 733 foreign missionaries. 5700 native worker? In various lands, and It. has brought 170,000 women directly Into the church, besides Its In calculable Influence on emancipa tion and the better home life wherever the bcnefiolent society has touched. Its work Is growing almost daily; It Is now requiring $2,000,000 a year to carry on its activities to mnke the world bet ter. The theme of the sermon was the need of such work as the so ciety is doing; Lho presentation of Jesus Christ as the only refuge for troubled man. "Good Master, to whom else sliill wu go; for Thou also hast the words ot eternal life." From UiIb text he develop ed the need, and tho majesty, of such service as tho missionaries are giving, to almost every flag and every unflagged, backward, underprivileged people under the Bun. The afternoon was devoted to a pageant presented chlufly by the little people of Salem, with some il hunt nut ing numbers by return ed missionaries who bring the vivid pictures of child life In the countries where they serve. The Little Light Hearers, missionary organization of the church, undei the direction of Mrs. A. A. Lee and Mrs. W. D. Minier, gave some motion songs and other numbers. Misses Mcl'herson and Mrfi II christ, of W I Hamel te university. Rang a duet, and little Jeannette Maxwell also sang. The represen tation of the foreign countries by Miss Carlyle, Miss Butts and Miss Snyles, was especially Inter esting. The program was high ly effective. At the evening service, Mrs. Lester IT. Smith, wife of the Meth odist bishop now residing at He lena, Montana, but for years in the Indian field, spoke vividly of Indian life. Miss Florence Hooper, ot Brook lyn, general treasurer of tho Wo man's Foreign Missionary society closed the session with a presen tation of the need und the logic of the organization. She brought forward her own mental and spir itual reactions to the Question of Its need whether It could do what It sets out to do, whether It wae worth while, whether the mere social uplift or the overturn Ing of their faiths or the honor or the church or race superiority call d for tho effort and sacrifice of missionary work. The l?.dy Is a keen, philosophical observer, and sho asks the questions that Instant ly occur to most thoughtful crit ics. Her own answers to the questions brought out the urgent need of humanity for the gospel that has spread spiritual peace over the whole world. Tho speaker gave ft number of striking Illustrations of faithful ness and ability from other peo ples from the high caste und the low caste of India, of China, of Africa, to prove that the soul of every people ie worth the saving and that all respond In the same way to the gospel message. It brings light and peace and un selfishness to the- lowest social scale, where had been ignorance, greed, superstition, hate. Some of the delegates left Sun day night for their homes; a few stayed over until Monday, to scat ter the story of their great con ference. A committee brought In resolutions, which were adopted, thanking the people ot Salem for their fine hospitality, for their co operation in the conference work and for many courtesies.
