SALEM ARTISTS
Ralph Gilbert of Salem fared
well at the hands of J. Leo Fair
banks, head of the department of
art and architecture of the Oregon
Agricultural college, who Judged
the art exhibit at the etate fair
this week. Gilbert got first on a
portrait sketch, first on landscape
and second on a marine, all oils.
Original water colors by Galliot,
direct from France, French and
English etchings, posters in color
and magazine covers by Day Mur
phy of Portland, a young artist
from the art museum of Chicago,
are among the many things that
are proving of great fascination to
state fair crowds. Kenneth Brown
of Portland has a unique exhibit
of photograph lamp shinies.
Probably nothing finer has ever
been shown in the Salem art de
partment than the loan exhibit or
raro Oriental art objects, owned
by Mis. O. A. Cartozian of Port
land. This Includes wonderful
band embroideries, cloisonne,
which dates back through so
many dynasties that their age Is
not known.
There aro excellent specimens
of clay modeling; some beautiful
things from the Portland Art a
Tile company; many articles of
great Interest and attractiveness
in gesso and crystalline parch
ment, entered by Mrs. W. H.
Thomas of Portland.
Miss Genevieve Barnes of Port
land is showing an entirely new

Is the Laundry today?
Recently we set out to improve meth
ods to over come all your fears and
objections. Now note how well we
have succeeded.
DO you realize tho
amazing increase
in housewives who
send family wash
ings to the laundry?
More than two million to
day have entirely climin
inated washday. Shifted
the entire burden to the
laundry. An entirely new
kind of laundry.
A thousand fa nillica, right
here In Salem, ono' complete
freedom from woman's most
dreaded task.
Bo leading laundry owners,
ourselves Included, set out to
Improve methods. Now note
the almost unbelievable results.
Science Discovers
Better Ways
We then employed modern
science. And science gave us
new and better ways, far easier
on your clothes. Every method,
material, and process harmful
to customers' clothes was de
tected and then eliminated.
Today, at the Capital City
Laundry, only purest of ma
terials are used. Nothing but
pure, neutral soap, containing
no free alkali whatever. No
caustics, no clothes-eating
acids or chemicals. Nothing
which weakens fabric.
Now See Why
Many Do It
So
A few years ago laundries
did little but men's starched
collars, cuffs, and shirta. But
farscelng minds In this Indus
try grasped the possibilities of
tho power laundry. They saw
that Its only limit was the
QUALITY of the work, and
tho price.
For no woman really want
to do her own washing the
mussiest, sloppiest, most back
breaking slavery ever Imposed
upon woman. Modern woman
finds better ways to employ her
time.
Wet Wash
Try our economical
Wet-Wash service. It
saves you far more work
than an electric machine,
and actually at less cost.
Everything scientifically
washed with purest of ma
terials and returned
slightly damp, iust right
for ironing. 20 pounds or
less, 75c. 4c each addi
tional pound,
4 OTHER THRIFTY
SERVICES
You may safely wash your
face, or shampoo your hair, In
any solution which touches
your clothes. Apply this rigid
test to the laundry soaps you
use at home, and thus compare
with ours.
Nolc the New
Lower Prices
These vastly improved meth
ods brought us volume. Family
washings began to come in by
hundreds and thousands. Wo
men had found that at last
their clothes, even their daint
iest,' sheerest silken things,
were entirely safo at the laun
dry. And this volume brought
lower prices.
Today It costs SO MUCH
LESS, than you'd Imagine, to
tend your entire family wash
ing to us. We now offer you
five different services one to
fit every need and purse. You
can have Just the washing done
for loss than It costs, by any
method, at home.
Why not give this new serv
ice these improved pure
material methods a brief and
simple trial? Put It to a two
weeks test. Learn why so
many now use the laundry
