OREGON Physical Tests For Children Will Be Member of the stuff of the Mar ion county child health demon stration will act for the most parti in nu advisory capacity in tho case of the teachers' physical inspec tions, which are required to be held this fall in elementary schools, according to announce ment made yesterday. The in spection is required by state law uacted at tho last session of the state legislature, at the instigation of State Senator W. F. Woodward. Tho teachers' inspections have nothing to do with the examina tions to be held by the staff of the county health demonstration, It Is stated. "We could not possibly cover every school pupil in the county in a single year, even if we were to work nights and fauuiiays, and give them tiio kind of exam inations we do," sand one member of the demonstration staff yester day. The Inspection will be given by the teacher to every student in elementary schols In the county .soon after school begins. It Is ex pected to covor only such things as can be dotectcd by an amateur in health work, such as most pub ditioual acre feet of water for the project. Tho estimated cost is $30,000. The present sources of water for the district are Four Mile lake, Fish lake and the nat ural flow of Little Butte creek. State Engineer Luper said the application doubtless would be granted. Things like cleanliness, defective posture, imperfect vision, etc., will be not ed by the teacher, and written on blanks prepared nnd furnished t stute expense in compliance with the new stute law. The law r quires that no specific physician he recommended by the teacher, and no specific suggestion for cur ing whatever ailments may be found to exist. The blank is sun pipy filled out -and sent to the par ents, leaving it to their judgment to take what further measure: they may see fit. In addition to being more tech nical and more far reaching than the teachers' inspection, the dem onstration examination differs In being entirely voluntary, not only with the particular community where the clinic may be establish ed, but in tho case of each indi vidual to be examined. Whenever teachers ask for ad vice and assistance in their inspec tions, mem burs o the staff will give It to them, at least to a lim ited extent, hut otherwise the dem onstratton claims no connection with the inspection. A local physician has been engaged for the official school doc tor, and closer attention will be paid to the students' physical con dition than in previous years.
