PAGE TEN THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 1925 Report of C. D. Thomas, chief Dollar inspector for iiio vtato bu reau of labor, who has examined the cause cf the 'explosion which took place last week at the plumb ing establishment of Theo Hurr on South Commercial street, was made public today.. The chief rea Bon for the explosion, as indicated in the report, 1b that the tank from whfc h the steam emerged was waa welded together in such Way as to allow the parte to sep arate, permitting the water to seep out. "Housewives need have no con ecru about the hot water tanks used in their homes," the renor reads in part, "such tanks are gen rally of the required material an properly constructed. Many house wives become nervous when stea. issues from the hot. water faucet. fearing an overprussure on th tank might cause an explosion. The report indicates that Huch danger Is extremely remote. Mr. Darr stated at the time the cement occurred that U was caused, In hie opinion, by-the fact that the parts of the tank wer welded together where they prop eiiy should have been riveted. Th report states that along the sides particularly, where the water came through, the welding was weak. Burr's tank was equipped with check valve to keep Uc water from passing back Into the pipe. ThiB might have resulted in high pressure on the tank, it ie said had it not been for tho fact that the tunk wus uUo equipped with a safety valve, approved by the in Bpcctor, kept tho pressure from go ing obovo 100 pounds. While the ordinary hot water tunk Installed in Salem holes does not have a aufety valve, neither does it have a check valve, and any high pres et! re would dimply force the water back Into the pipe rather than causing the tank to burnt. ' Barr declares that if mere ex pansion of water had forced the tank open It would liuvo opened earlier In the day when the water wns heating ami expanding. What actually happened, he Bays, was that day after day th expansion and contraction of tho water within tho tank worked tlx Welding loose. Had it -been slight T3? stronger, H might have lasted longer, and tho ueddent occurred when the ;rhop was full, with n ro. lilting low of several lives. The water, finally allowed to flow through the crack, wuh immediate ly transformed into at com when tho pressure was released. Water always transforms hilo Mourn more easily at low pressure than at high pressure, which ie the rea son why the housewife sometimes gets nothing hut steam from, the faucet, when there Is nothing hut water in the pipe. The water, changing Intosleam, had tho effect of a strong push, which did damage to the shop ontl ninlcd ot $2500. The establishment is being rap idly repaired, new windows hav ing been put in at tho front mid along the north side, where they were completely demolished. Parts of the north wall (hat were torn loose have been replaced.
