THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 1925 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON 'PAGE THREE DELUGE OF RAIN OF HOP! INDIANS Chicago, Aug. 20. Storms, cloudbursts, hail and wind, dam aging crops, telephone linos and property in Arizona, Indiana, 1111' nois, Iowa and New York's dairy country were the seeming answer to th0 prayers for the ruin of. the Hopi Indians :n their snake dance ceremonial yesterday. Today the hot blasts were mov lng easward and moderating. Heavy downpours, reaching cloudbursts proportions, in north ern Arizona, came almost on th heels ot the Hopi snake dance, which ended a nine-day religious ceremonial. In the ancient puebl' of Waisi, tho braves and squaw gathered for the rite, which is one of few which are permitted. Pois onous reptiles sprinkled with sacred meal .were held in th mouths and wreathed the necli and bedies of the Indian dancei during tho ceremony. Prayers were bestowed on tliein and they were turned loose to carry the "benedictions" to the "snake mother," and the 'spider woman ot tho underworld," who is the 'weaver of the clouds." Little damage was caused b; the Arizona downpours, but other sections were not as fortunate. In the east and in Illinois, crop dam 1 ago was considerable. The Al bany team has u strong aggrega tion this year and in order to fur nish the Albany fans Btroug enough competition they took the Vancouver franchise of the Inter state league over after the Van couver club failed to show enough clafcs. They bad to take the club'd siauuing at mat time which was .seven losses and no wins. They did not car especially about the standing only worrying about the better games that the league would atfurd. After losing tneir first two games upon entering the league they took life and defeated sev' eral of the strongest clubs. Sa lem was forced to bow to them and for that reason Frisco Edwards, manager of the Senators, has scheduled another game to get re venge. Oeamis, wno was in the Senator uniform for a couple of games but (ailed to show any thing, is Albany's star hurler and seems to have iound his stride and is making tho suing rather rough for his opponents. If he is in shape lor the game tuts Sunday the lo cals will find tough sledding. ino senators have been play ng excellent ball so far this sea son and have the oest team they have had in years. With this game in prospect the fans ought to flock out to see their home team in action. Edwards has not decided who ho will start on the mound. Very likely Ashby will start, although he might start Quisenberry. Quisen berry has been with the locals in the outfield for the last game or so and is a fair pitcher and Edwards might give Mm the chance.
