SATURDAY, AUGUST I Klamath Pulls, Aug. 16 If the throe men who held up and kid naped G. A. Hnyes, night man in an electric shop, hero early this morn I riff were the three escaped convlctsMurray, Kolly and Willos the lenders of the fugitives, Tom Murray, has staged a remarkable recovery from the gunshot wounds he sustained o nthe night of his escape in the opinion of police of ficers, who wero conducting probo of the holdup this morning. Hayes, the victim, pointed to a newspaper photograph of Murray and partially identified him aa the leader of the trio of bandits. It was Murray, he said, who took the lead. It was Murray who shoved a niclcol-plnted revolver In hit stomach. The man ho identified as Murray showed no evidence of having been wounded, he said. Later this morning Hayea was not so certain In hta Identification, and police authorities wero inclin ed to the belief that the three men are tho same tmndlts who have been staging holdups on the high wayw ne;.r Klamath Knlls and even on the city strcetH during the past several weeks. , A peace officer expressed belief that they are tho sumo trio who robbed six hunk houses at - the Ewanna logging camp earlier this week. It was also pointed that the three men showed a familiarity with their surroundings at the electric shop where Hayes was robbed. "I haven't any money," protest ed the night man. "Aw, wo know there's money hero and we're going to get it," the leader of the trio countered, an he forced Hayes into the office and compelled him to open the cash register. In spite of the Improbability that the bandits rfre the escaped con victs, sheriff's deputies and oth er officers are conducting a search for the bandits, on the theory that they might possible be the escaped -ton vie ts. JoneB on his ranch near ArlltiRton camo home for a short visit arriving in Brooks Saturday morning at five o'clock. They left Arlington Friday evening. Morton had purchased an auto and came home to get his driver'a license. A young man from Independence drove home for him and took him to Salem Saturday, got his license and Sunday ho drove his car back to Arlington, ready to work again Monday morning. Reuben McCall who has uoon working for John Mytheeomb at Arlington came home Tuesdny. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gilbert of Portland were week end guests of their parents In lirooks returning to their home Monday afternoon. Mr. Gilbert is having his annual vacation. Ho Is with the telephone company Just starting on his twenty-third year with the Bell com pany. Mr. Brown of the Shell service Btntlon is improving his property by building a garage and woodshed and an addition to his storeroom as his business has Increased so he was crowded for room. They serve warm meals to todrists. Tho Indies and society of the Methodist Episcopal church met Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Tosher at I,ake Lablsh. Tho weight of the body, he added, had bent the limb o! the tree until the feet of the mummified body were resting lightly upon the ground beneath the tree. Because of the condition of the mummy, Investigators were unable to even determine the nationality of the body, but are Inclined to the belief tli:t It Is that of a Japa nese. CORONER'S PROBE The coroner's investigation of tho state prison delivery of Wed nesday evening in which two guards, J. M. Holman and John Sweeney, and an escaping convict "Oregon" Jones, were killed, was begun here last night at the office of Coroner Lloyd T. Rlgdon. After establishing the Identity of the dead men and tho manner and cause of their deaths the Inquest was adjourned until Monday after noon at 2 o'clock. James W. Lewis, former warden of the state prison and now a Marlon county deputy sheriff, for mally ldentitlod Sweeney, whom he had known for 30 years. Edwin Jacobson of Portland identified Holman. He was Holman's brother-in-law. Dee Jones of Portlnnd, a brother of tho dead desperado, Identified Oregon Jones. Dr. W. Carlton Smith described the wounds received by the two guards and Dr. G. E. Many of the yards have started proceedings already and others are scheduled to start soon. It Is expected there will be a few weeks of early hop picking be fore tho late season will be due. The crop will be a bumper one ac cording to all indications. "Whether the pickers will be paid by weight or box is yet to be de cided, as it is in litigation at the present time. (A. P.) Investigation in tho narcotic ex pose here has developed that there ure IS, 000 drug addicts here mak ing no secret of their plight. Sev eral thousand more, L. J. Ulmer, acting chief agent, estimates, also use drugs but do not deal with narcotic peddleru. The averago addict uses 25 grains a day saya IHiner. Some use 50 and one physician made affidavit (hat for years he had taken 75 grains daily. Oue grain would be fatal to the major ity of non-uaers. While officials collect data on the extent of narcotic used here they continue search for loot which they charge Colonel Will Gray Beach, narcotic chief agent here, with receiving in exchange for drugs. In ten packing cases belonging to beach, agents yesterday found a miscellany of merchandise rang ing from a baby's skull to a sack full of cheap Jack knives. Includ ed were a hundred Chinese bowls, lampshades, clgaretto cases, opium pipes and hundreds of keys. Jewelry valued at $50,000 was found In safety deposit boxes be longing to Kitty Gilhooly which followed the seizure of drugs valued at $100,000 several days ago.
