GARETAKER AT AUTO PARK MAY : LOSE FINGERS E. C. Purvlne, caretaker at the Sblein auto park, was currying his left hand In a sling today, huving cb.t the first unci second fingers nearly off while splitting wood at th.e cump late Sunday night. The question of whether or not tho two faugers can be saved and kept on the hand had not been decided to day by his physicians, but PurViuc stated I his morning that ho would prefer to have them completely amputated, einc in any event he will never again be able to use them actively again. The first finger of the hand was cut almost completely off, hanging by a small strip of skin through which the axe did not cut. The second finger was In n condtlion nearly as bad. In both cases the bono was cut. The accident was primarily due to dccfctlvo lighting in tho shod where the water s heated for the use of tourists. Purvino went in to the shed to build up a fire for the night, as is his custom. He has built a fire late every night this season, in order to give the tourists hot water for use in the morning. He held a stick of wood In his left hand, lift-d the axo in his right hand and brought it down, intending to cut tho wood. The end ot the axe handle, however, struck some object that he had been unable to see, causing the head of tho axe to swerve from its intended ocurse and strike his two fingers at the point where they join the hand. Blood flowed free ly. A nearby autoist succeeded In taking Purvlne to town, where the damaged hand was repaired as well as possible AUCTIONS COL. Co. cl9i LONG BELL FIRM CUT OVER LANDS Longview, Wash., Aug. 11 A comprehensive program of refor estation to etfoct a ro-seedlng at a rato equal to tho progress of de nudation and following within three years after logging, wns an nounced by the Long-Bell Lumber company. Experiment In direct seeding will be conducted and such other species as redwood. Port Or- ford cedar and white pine will be tried on a commercial scale to sup plement the native Douglas fir, hemlock and red cedar. A large forest nursery will be established at Ryderwood, center of the log ging operations for the company. The announcement of tho pro gram, which definitely provides for five yenrj time, was made to day by M. B. Nelson president of tho company now in Longview. it follows three months intensive sur voy made by Captain J. B. Woods, forest engineer of the Long Bell Lumber company, and is modeled somewhat afto.' successful reforest otlon under way in the redwood districts of California. One feature of the reforestation plan of special interest is develop ment of fire lines of alder and oth er broad leaf species along aban doned logging spurs, which will sub divide the cut over lands Into smallor compartments and faclll tato protection of the young growth. In explaining the program Mr. Nelson said that in the course of logging enre is being taken to re move all snags largo enough to constitute firo hazard. Slash dis posal is being carried on In ac cordance with state laws, and care fully organized fire patrol Is main talncd to protect cut-over lands as well as virgin timber. "Tho program Is being mapped out now for a period of five years because of the present rapid strides boing taken by the stato and fed' oral government in reforestation work," said Mr. Nelson.
