THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON MONDAY, JULY 27, 1925 News from Nearby Valley Points Prom the Richest and Best Part of the State By Capital Journal's Special Correspondents PAGE TWO OF The cut worm menace that was threatening eomo of the Luke Lab tan crops, ie now reported un der control. J. O. HayeA, Jr. states that on hie place which le situated near the northeastern extremity of the lake, they were exceptionally numerous near a patch of flax from which they had devoured all the tender weeds Coming out on to the onions they ate down eever.il . row heforo their advance could be checked. Tula waa done by digging a trench, in the bottom of which, poison food for them waa placed. The ground waa nlao sprayed with keroeene. , His theory to account for their, unusual numbers this year Is that their natural enemy, the redtail ed fly, having reduced the number of the worms from year to year ,by preying upon them, had not ritifflclent food for the young rum and have migrated for the Hmn hiiiir to other fielda. leav ing tbia district unprotected. As each cut worm moui cuu my uv proximately 700 eggs and are supposed to complete the cycle of iurvc to mom three times in t flPAAnn. they increase with start- line raniditv when no check Je placed upon them. He predicts thnt the abundance of food will bring increasing numbers of the flies which will swing conditions again to normal. MACKABEN PLEADS NOT . GUILTY RECKLESS DRIVING Dallas. Or., July 27.
