Salem Is Considered As Possible Site For Mennonite College Reports circulating in Salem for tho past eeveral daya point to the possibility of a new Mennonite icq demy and liiljlo ui'hool to he ctiUibliHlicd In tho Willamette val ley. H It) known that leaders in national MeiMionuo circles arc Rerlously considering the est ah- llahmeiit of a school on the Pacific slope, nono existing on the coast at the present time. It iu further known that the Willamette valley is considered as a posnlble loca tion, along with other Bccttons of the coast. Dallas and Salem aro both prom inently mentioned as pomlbllltiOB for tho location of tho flchool, pro vided it is built in Oregon. Local Mennonltcs, when Inter viewed on the question, admit Lhat investigations aro being made and express tho hope that Salem may be chosen aa the loca tion of the proposed school. No decision will bo reached for a number of montliH, they nlate. Ono posHiblo site mentioned for the school, ehouui LSalem bo se lected, la a section of property ad joining tho Deaconess hospital on South Winter, near Mission street. rhe idea would bo to have the building face north, looking di rectly up Winter street, with the prevent hospital building to Ms left. Tho property mentioned belongs to the Deaconc&s hospital at pres ent, but if ueed for a hospital would be operated as an entirely distinct institution. Mennonite schools now In operation In the United States Includo tho follow ing institutone: illufton collego at Dlufton, Ohio; G oh sen college at Ciohsen, hid.; Hetliel college at Newton, Kan.; lleston college at Ilcston. Kan.; Whltmarsum collego in Ohio; Tabor college at llillsboro, Kan.; Freeman college at Free man, South Dakota. In the ab Hcnco of n college on the Pacific i'ont a number of Mennonltcs in tho west have been patronizing Tory Illblo HChool since ft was es tablished in Los Angeles eomc 20 years ago. The Oregon school would give instruction for tho most part in high school grades, at least at the beginning. Kvcntuully a four year college coitreo might be add ed. The institution would be open to everyone, although It would be established primarily for (ho benefit of Mennonito students. A Bihlo school, which would turn out Mennonito preachers, would bo established In connection with tho academy. The Ancient Highway (A Review by Mark ltnylc.) CHINESE HAVE QUEER SPORTSMANSHIP IDEAS Nanking Sports meota which aro being held throughout the Yangtzo valley in central China are demonstrating the lack of apprccia tlon among Chinese youth of the spirit of porsmanship and the need of training along this line. At an Anhwel meet recently a gov crnment technical school was play Ing basket ball with the local Allsslon Cathedral school. The technical school was ahead most of the first half, but a few minutes before tho whistle sounded the Cathedral boys picked ur and tied tho score. In tho second half it became quite obvious that the Cathedral team was the stronger and would doubtless win. The technical boys, seeing themselves losing stopped playing on tho pretext that the boskets were not round. They pro ceeded to tear down the baskets, then went to the government dress ing building and wrecked the place. Modern research haa disclosed that tho chariots which plied for hire about the Acropolis in tho days of Pericles wero fitted wit hingeniua and highly industrious taximeters.
