"Without or with offense to friends or foes 1 sketch your world exactly as it goes." byron. Oily Olson Gushes The Reverend Doctor "Oily" Olson, of Half Moon Bay, .Cottage Grove, Eugene nnd other verdant fields where he exploits jointly oil and religion, with more or less profit to the exploiter, pauses long enough in his location of gushers by means of a divining-rod and the sale of. stock in the same to godly members of his flock, to publish as an adver tisement in a Eugene newspaper a two column- diatribe against the Capital Journal for its editorial upon Bryan and the Scopes' trial, concluding with a bitter assault upon the theory of evolution. Now the Reverend Olson knows just as much about evolution as he does about geology, which is nothing at all, but having taken the Lord into partnership and being an adept at skinning suckers, he feels fully competent to assail and abuse those who differ from him, as spawn of the devil. Listen to this: This foollnh writer (the Capital Journal pditor) thinks that he can cling: to Christ and throw away the Bihicul account of creation. Conic out of tho brush und declare yourself as an atlielflt. Infidel, skeptic and arch-enemy of Christ, t lie Bible, and the Christian religion, and tho churches will moot you in the open and deal with you in the ltKht of intelligence as llioy did with Voltaire, Ingcrsoli and Under wood, in their day. Just which of the two different accounts of the creation given in Genesis the Reverend Olson refers to, is a question, but there is no question but that his effusion reflects the sweet Christian spirit of love, humility and tolerance char acteristic of those pulpit fundamentalists who in airing their folly and bigotry denounce and revile those whose cardinal sin is to hold different opinions from infallible ignoramuses. But where does Underwood come in? The Reverend Olson might stand a belter chance of "selling" his obscurantism if lie pursued the tactics used in peddling his oil swindles, viz: open the meeting with prayer, ask the special blessing of the Lord upon his rod and staff of divination, and when by skillful blending of oratory, oil and gospel, the purse-strings of the faithful have been loosened, to the tune of "Onward Christiwi Soldiers", close with a Glory Hallelujah and Hosannns because there is one born' Very minute. Notwithstanding the abuse of bone-heads, the Capital Journal sees no reason why science can not harmonize with religion, if not with dogma, and in this connection we quote from a recent address by President K. W. Chase of the University of North Carolina, where the teaching of evolu tion is sanctioned: Scientific conclusions lut have seemed to ono generation hostile to religion have been seen by (hone who rnnio nfter them as hut additional tiwlinmnv to tho wonderous ways of Cod. Who now finds nthchiln in an earlh Unit Is not fixed, but moves; or denounces the physicist Tor learning Iho laws of gravitation; or hellevoa that to Kivo up belief In witchcraft In lo give up belief in tho Bible? North -Carolina Is a deeply and genuinely religious State. It Is In no denial, rather is n positive affirmation of Its faith, that It has taken the stand that faith in Cod nnd the free pursuit of knowledge are handmaidens each to oarli, that Iho priesthood of science ran he at tho same time iho priesthood of (he living Cod. you remember that." After she had gone Cynthia lay quite still, wondering, what Louella meant. What cause would she have lo remember that I,ouella had warned her? "She acts as If I'd done some thing perfectly terrible," reflected Cynthia. "How could a man so broad-minded as Jim come from such a narrow-minded family?" And yet, after all, had Jim been so very broad-minded? Cynthia tried to defend him to herself. Of course, he'd gono off to Honolulu with his mother Instoad of taking her, and he had acted strangely but then, ho was very fond of his mother, and perhaps ho couldn't bo blamed for letting her manage him She did not want to admit whatj was so evident, that Jim's affection must have waned. She was htfll curled up on the choice lounge when Cecilo Malcol Htrodo breezily into the room. Hello what a luxurious thing you nre. My dear, will you forgive mo for being so nasty tho other night when I saw you at dinner? I'm crazy about Noel, too. And to hco you with him, when he's neg letting mo so "JJon t say 'too I'm not In love with him," protested Cynthia. We're just good friends." Ceeile chuckled as she rummag ed through her pookoU for a cig arette. "Vcs, I've hoard that story before. Let mo tell you that no woman can be 'Jiwt good friends' with Noel Gardner when she goes around with him as much as you do. And if you think he Isn't In love with you, you're not near as sensible as I thought you wore. Anyone could tell by the way he looks at you " "Oh, Ceeile, please! Just because you care for Noel yourself, you misjudge both him and mo. I tell you we re just f r f e n ds. No w bo sensible." "Oh. have it your own wav! Though if he spent half tut much time with n I'd walk around town with a huge sign telling people about it. Helcne was in the florists the other day, and she said he waa ordering or chids for you that made her turn absolutely green with envy." - i-j Ab Oie orchids were in a bowl on her dressing table, Cynthia aaid nothing, t Ceeile went at last, nfter vain ly begging Cynthia to drosa and go walking with her, and once more Cynthia was left to her own thoughts. Hhe began to wonder If she had maJe a dreadful mistake In tho way she had acted about Jim. Perhaps It would have been better if she had insisted on Join Ing him when she first learned that ho was to be away for a long time. Sho could have gone to him with out letting him know that sho was coming; once they wore together. sho felt sure that he would not huvo sent her back home. Ami surely ho would believe her. Noel Gardner phoned to ask her to dino with him, 'tut she refused, feeling that she must bo alone. Vivo minutes later a cablegram nr rived. She tore it open eagerly. Word from Jim at last! "Stay with Louella till my re turn," she read. "Stay with Louella, Indeed!" cried Cynthia bitterly. "Indeed I shan't! This Is tho last straw!" Tomorrow A Helping Hand. The progressives of Hie cily council are renewing their five year Hlrugglc lo provide a modern nuto parking statute nnd thus take Salem out of the hick-town class. It is to be hoped that the effort will be successful for the capital city long since outgrew the now obsolete backing-in system that years ago was discarded elsewhere. Great bodies move slowly, which perhaps accounts for the very deliberate manner and the exlrme caution and care in which this problem has been attacked. But the five years that have intervened riucc the head-in measure was first introduced have given ample lime for reflection and we nre assured that nothing rash will be put-over. Probably the awkward backing-in system has occasioned more unfavorable comment from tourists than nny other leature or halem. Such remarks as "What's the big idea?" "Where did you get it?" and "This is the worst we've seen" nre heard daily as traffic is hailed for a block for some one to reverse nnd swing clumsily backward to the curb. Of course there is no sense in it but we do a lot of tilings simply because of custom and fool laws but we would like to find out tho name of the inventor of reverse parking and get Dr. Coe to erect n statue in his honor. Meanwhile the issue is are we going ahead or going backward? I'd LIKE. TO',k DICTATE. bOME. UTTER,- rf ' iijORRX; BOT J .VOUR. DAUGHTER . ME TO CETOllTl"1 ,THEt)E LETTER.
