Tho government pile driver arrived at Grand Island, some 13 miles down the river from Salem, today, and the crew is expected to begin work tomorrow closing the channel on the west side of the Island. The entire flow of wa ter In the river will be sent down the east side of the island, making the river bod considerably deep er on that side, and making it dry on the west side. It is thought that when the wor!: is finished the Northwestern will be able to steam past Grand Island without difficulty. Tho last section of the water heater at the new swimming es tablishment being built by Otto Klett wis erected today. Water will he pumped from the wull through the heater and Into the swimming tank. The well Is 300 feet deep. Date of opening the tank to the public has not been definitely announced. With the mercury rrcislerinc on the streets of Salem at 2 o'clock this afternoon, it was ea timnted that it would reach r2 or 93 degrees above zero before eve ning, with the strong pofvubility that it would go higher still. Yes terday's maximum, 91 degree.-, was reached late in the afternoon. Toilay the barometer, after rising gradually all morning, began to fall rapidly at about noon, indi cating a po.ssible change in the weather if it kept falling. SAYS SO CALLED New York, July 16. (AP) Suggestions in recent special dis patches from Berlin that An as tasia, one of the daughters of the former ltussian czar, Is alive, arc doubted by Glen K. Botkin, once a mcurher of the czar a entourage now living here. He Is convinced that the woman who has represented herself to the former crown Princess Cecelie as grand Duchess Anastasia Is a fraud. "I received practically conclus ive evidence that Anastasia was killed," he said, "when I complet ed a personal investigation into the fate of my father, who was killed with the members of the czar's family In Ekaterinburg, Si beria, on July 17, 1918." Botkin himself was arrested with members of the royal fami ly and exiled, when the first rev olution broke out in September, 1917, to Tobolsk, in western Si beria. Later the remainder of the par ty except Botkin and his sister were taken to Ekaterinburg. When the white guards captur ed Ekaterinburg in July, 191S Botkin went there and found the entire party had been executed three days before hie arrival. Murphv who was horn and lived the sixty years of hie life in St. Paul, died yesterday at St. Vincent's hospital In Portland af ter a major operation. Murphy was the manager of the St. Paul Sand and Gravel company. Ho was the husband of Emma Murphy, and the father of Howard P. Mur phy of Rlckford, 111., and of Fran ces ind Beatrice Murphy of St. Paul. . Funeral services will be held at the St. Paul church at ten o'clock tomorrow morning with interment in the St. Paul ceme tery. POLICE BUY ROPE FOR FIRE LINE PURPOSES Police today purchased 250 feet of rope which is to be used to pre vent traffic congestion at the scene of future fires. Five thousand strikers surround cd tho pits where seven hundred miners it till stuck to their work. One hundred police were railed to disperse them and the clash en sued.
