Miss Lela V. Scopes was told by
the superintendent there yesterday
that her aorvlces would not be re
quired when she declined to say
that she did not believe In the
theory of evolution.
Scopes Is to go on trial here
July 10 for violating the Tennes
ee anti-evolution law.
Miss Scopes has taught mathe
matics at Paducah two years.
A member of the school board
Is quoted as saying that Miss
Scopes' presence in the high school
faculty might embarrass the pub
lic school system. The young wo
man is now attending the Univer
sity of Kentucky.
Information was awaited here
today as to the outcome of a con
ference of leading defense attor
neys held In New York last night.

The people of France are ahead
of Americans In matters pertain
ing to art and music, and behind

and morality, Dr. Walter Brown,
head of the Marlon County Child
Health Demonstration told the Sa
lem Rotary club at lta luncheon
Wednesday. Speaking on the sub-

ed. At the walls of Paris every In

goods searched. A heavy duty

sold in the. city. Every outgoing
automobile is examined for the
amount of gasoline In the tank. If
it carries more coming In than go
ing out, duty must be paid on the
excess.

elgn Minister Tchltcherin has is
sued a statement asserting that
although the sympathies of the
Russians are on the side of the
Chinese In their struggle for com
plete liberation from foreign dom
ination, the Soviet's policy ie to
avoid any action which could be
regarded as intervention in Chi
na's Internal affairs.
The statement was prompted by
the Increasing attacks upon soviet
Russia in the English newspapers
in connection with the present
situation In China, coupled with
the recent speech of Loughborousn
by Lord Girkenbead, which is re
garded here as official sanction
for these attacks.
"Sympathy does not mean in
tervention," lays Tchltcherin in
refuting statement that Rubs la Is
interested In prolonging the Btatc
of chaos in China and desires to
assume the role of protector."
