THURSDAY, JUNE 4, The river steamer Relief, which sank on December 24, while moored in the Willamette river 'it the foot oC Court Btreet, was sold at public auction for $2100 yes terday afternoon. The boat was bid in by D. W. Ridgway as ageut for Durham & Bates, who are Portland agents for the Globe & Rutgers Ftre Insurance company of New York, who in turn are said to be agents for Lloyds of London. Litigation has been in process ever since the boat sank. Yester day's auction, which was 'conduct ed by Harry V. Reed of Portland, chief deputy United States mar shal, was made by order of the federal court at Portland to satisfy a judgment given by default in favor of the insurance company when the company brought suit to collect $3243.26 and costs, al leging that the sum had been ex pended in raising and repairing the Relief, and that the boat had been deliberately allowed to sink by its owners. It is fhought that if more than the sum allowed in the judgment had been bid at yesterday's auc tion, the representatives of the in surance company would have let the boat co. Legal authorities state that under the former status the owners could not hope to secure the entire $20, 000. Whether they Imve, by allowing the boat to be sold at public auction, seriously increased their chances to collect the policy, is a question which will be determined when the cose conies up for trial.
