The season ticket campaign was
organized by grouping the zs lo

of four. The grouping was done
by a committee composed of W. 1

cent attendance, under the old-
time Chautauqua purpose, was
unanimously decided upon.
The meeting last night was
marked by the utmost confidence
that the record of first place won

"Years ago, 25 or 30 years ago,
Maurice Klinger, wno then oper
ated a brewory here, used to have
a well under his brewery which
actually gave out salt water. It
was a well known fact that this
well was a good producer of salt
water and people used to come
from miles around toeee this phe
nomenon, to taste the water as it
came up from the well and to go
away and tell their neighbors
about how the sea stretched in
under Salem and yielded up Its
salt water In great quantities;
right under the brewery of Maur
ice Klinger.
I know quite a little about
that famous salt water well as ll
worked in tho brewery where the
well was. It came about in this
manner: Maurice wanted some
water under his brewery to wash
out the condensers, bo be hired
man to bore a well. He went down
HiO feet, struck hard rock and quit.
So Maurice hud a well dug. He
found water all right and used it
"We fellows who worked in the
brewery handled a great deal of
brine from the ice machines and
the easiest way to dump out the
brine was to dump it into the well
that Maurice had hud dug. Maurice
said it was all right as the water
was. used only to wash the con
denscrs, and It wasn't long after
we started dumping In the brine
that the well began yielding a
pretty good imitation of regular
old fashioned sea water.
"That's how Maurice Klingor
created a well that produced salt
water. I am of the opinion if
Klett gets salt water by digging
around here he will have to tap
the old Klinger well."
Boston, Juno 3. (A. P.) The
condition of Secretary of W
John W. Weeks, who was operated
on for gall stones at the Massa
chusettH general hospital last
week was described as "not so
favorablo" in a bulletin issued
this morning by his physician,
Doctors Daniel Fiske Jones and F.
Gorham Brigham.
The bulloain said:
''Secretary Weeks' condition Is
not so favorable this morning. lie
had a restless night and has had
some vomiting. His temperature
is 100 and his pulse 104."
In a statement made public yes
terday the physicians attending
Secretary Weeks, who submitted
to the operation last Thursday,
said his condition remained criti
cal. Although no complications
had developed, the statement said
Mr. Weeks had not shown tho Im
provement expected at this stoge
of his treatment.

Road System Held Wrong
In speaking of the highway pro
gram, Mr. Palmiter declured the
pride of the state le Its road sys
tem, but declared that some who
felt the prido still were opposed
to our system of financing. He
spoke for the direct method of
financing as followed-by Washing
ton and compared their roads,
which were paid for as they were
built, and wore built at a lower
mileage cost. The bulk of the
$5,000,000 annual receipts from
the gasoline and motor vehicle tax
should go to highway building
rather than to "paying for a dead
horse," he doclured.
In his resume of grange activ
ities Mr. Palmiter showed where
25 new granges had been organ
ized, 2 re-organized, and four new
Pomonaa and four juvenile
granges instituted since August
27, 1924. The growth of eastern
Oregon granges has featured the
work of the organization. Deputy
Roy Gekeler, working In north
eastern counties of Oregon has
contributed 12 new subordinate

The real work of the session
will begin today. Resolutions will
be Introduced from the floor and
roferred to committees without de
bate. Committee reports will come,
later In the session. Important
conferences are scheduled for the
day. On Wednesday evening the
Lecturer's program, open to the
public, will be presented. The ses
sions will continue throughout
Thursday and Friday, reaching
adjournment some time Friday
evening.
The Grangers were welcomed to
Dallas Tuesday night at a banquet
and barbecue tendered by the
Dallas Chamber of Commerce. A
band concert and short speeches
made up tho program. Because of
tho weather the affair was
switched from the city park to
the armory. It waa In charge of
C. L. Crlder, general chairman.
