A large crowd attended tha school picnic which was held at Hugcr's grove May 25. A basket dinner was enjoyed at noon onfl then began tho great event of tho year, the ball game between the married men and the Bcliiiol boys. Thoso starrins on the men's team wore Andy Parson, George lluger and A. Hinegar. Several of the papas were great ly surprised when they were fan ned out by Willier Straw pitching for the boys. The married women held the glrlt; down to an even score in n three-inning game. Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Magee made a business trip to Crooked Finger lrst week. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Binegar will spend the week end at the beach. A. Van Cleave of Portland was a guest of his father-in-law, D. A. Harris, Tuesday evening. Mr. and MrB. Polk fi nances on May 1, 1925, revealed a much healthier condition than was forecast at the beginning o! tho year, according to County Clerk lllack, who lias completed a check o funds as of May 1. This shows cash on hand with tho county treasurer of $151, 002.92, with outf!::;iulng warrants totalling only ?59,770.28. In ad dition there are uncollected taxes amounting to 375,2S6.CO. Be tween May 1 and May 20 Sheriff Hooker turned over an additional 100,5119.51 in tax money, bring ing up the cash on hand Item to over $212,000. The uncollected taxes are divid ed $300,199.92 on tho 1924 levy. $23,009.98 remaining from the 1923 levy, end the balance spread back to 1908. The county In hiso about due for another share of motor vehicle license funds from the state and for market road money from the state. The outstanding warrants, amounting to $59,770.28, are di vided as follows: General fund $12,757.24; general road fund $25,020.81; market road fund $5050.55; road district fund $15, 318.89; dog fund $999.91, with the balance made up of smaller amounts on other funds. The resources on hand are ap portioned as follows ($151, 002.92): General fund $00,202.00 general road fund $3181.01; mar ket road $3939: motor vehicle. $0149.19; road districts $8207.32: dog fund $317.80, with tho bal ance composed of school funds. No less than six being in town at the same time. The two old bridges, over the mill race, near the Baker Hotel, have been removed by the city, as they had become unsafe for use. Walter Robinson accompanied by a friend, motored down from Mill Cfity, Sunday for a visit in this vicinity. J. L. Webb and family, have moved "back to Turner and are liv ing In Farris property, formerly occupied by H. G. Knighton. Their son Fayo Is on the farm. A representative of the Salem Chamber of Commerce was in Turner last week in the interest of the new linen mill which Is to be built in Salem In the near future. The first flax to be grown lu Oregon was produced in 1S75, by two farmers living near this city, ac cording to a statement given out here by Lou Miller. Lint from the rlax grown at that time was sent to the centennial exposition at Philadelphia a year later and re ceived firiit prize in competition with products from all parts of the world, Mr. Miller stales. Thir teen judges, experts from various countries, juuging without con sultation, unanimously awarded the first premium to life product from Oregon. An attempt was made soon after ward to start an active flax in dustry in the Willamette valley, a beginning being made toward a twine manufacturing plant at Al bany, but eastern competitors nip ped the p.oject in the bud, under selling local manufacturers to si'.ch an extent that they were un able to get on their feet financial ly. Tho plant, which was moved from Sun Francisco, nover had a chance to get started. The first flax, grown by Jease Parrish ind Charles Miller, both of whom lived im the immediate vicinity ot Jefferson, was pulled by hand, then retted and scutched on Miller's farm, which was lo cated some two in ilea from Jeffer son to the north and east.
