buyers. It is possible there will
be other buyers with reports rrom
California and other districts that
a short crop Is threatened and as
a result the growers uesire some

On the other hand they made It
plain In their conference with the
eanners that they had no Intention
or desire to running hog wild

brothers plant, with the big straw
berry run opening up generally in
canneries next Tuesday morning
probably one of tho biggest straw
berry packs in history, tho prob
lem of cannery labor has hecomo
ncute, and the 8. O. 8. call for
more women with which to "wom-

Large numbers of women are
registering but more are needed
and the earlier they can register
the better, so that the plants will
he in n position to know Just where
they are.

The proposed experiment for
shipping of green gooseberries east
will be tried out.
This became known definitely to
day when it was announced that
Frank Crawford, one of the larg
est growers, with a few others.
will be extended the facilities or
Hunt brothers cannery In prepar
ing for green shipment of their her
ricfl to eastern markets for the
first time to try to seek a new
and possibly excellent outlook for
the berries. It Is expected three
or four cars will be shipped by way
of experiment and the results no
doubt will have a- great bearing
on possibllitiea for such green ship
ping In future years.
Crawford has about 35 acres of
gooseberries and will probably
handle about 30 tons. His goose
berries are reported to be In fine
condition, the patch having been
well kept, carefully sprayed and
handled up to the top notch of
perfection. It Is stated If nny
gooseberries can get by and make
good Impression with nn experi
ment of this kind his should.
Tho growers will handle tho con
signing of the berries on their own
hook, nnd pocket any profits or
losses. Hunt brothers merely have
extended the use of the facilities
of their plant to them to assist In
putting over tho experiment and
ascertaining whether It may bo a
profitable venture, for this year,
and for yours to come.
'Iho experiment is one that will
bo watched with keen interest by
growera as gooseberries havo re
ceived something of a bump as a
inning berry and if It can be ship
lied green with profit will open up
good outlet.
