The Silverton Woman's club held Its last meeting for tills huoh Monday afternoon at tbe home of tha out-going president, Mrs. Ernest Palmer. Tbe da? was the annual guest day and each club member was permitted to bring a g'se-.t to the meeting. About forty members and guests were present. The club bas made it a practice to take up a subject fur study each year. During tbe post season "Japan" has been studied. A sub ject for the coming year, which opens this fall, was discussed. Many were suggested, but -"Legislation" seemed to be first choice, with "Oregon" second and "Chi na" third. Tha matter of deciding upon tbe subject was left in tha hands of a committee of which . Mrs, 11. E. Klelnsorge is chairman. A revlsw of . Japan was taken up in which Tent the visitors took part. Following this a musical program was given consisting of a doulogue by Mm. R. Russell and Mrs. J. Welch with Mrs. Oordon McCall at the piano, piano solo by Mrs. McCall and vocal solos by Mrs. O. Bentson and Mrs. G. Raven. At the business meeting com mittee reports were read and the business was closed up for the year. The library board and the iKjpltal committee reported thai tha club had contributed liberally to these two Institutions during the past year. LIONS 10 PLAY Tonight the Salem Lions club baseball team will meet the Ki wanls club 1 1 what Is expected to be a blood and thunder match. The Lions have Issued the chal lenge and were quickly accepted by the Ki wauls. Last year the Lions Issued the cry bnt bit the duet In a hard fought game and they are expecting to get revenge. Mayor stafrin announced the veto of the truck tax ordinance recently en acted by the city council at an adjourned meeting of the council held Monday night. He stated that he considered the measure as ex horbltant and one that would pro I) ably have involved the city in dif ficult legal action. The measure was passed May 4 by a 5 to 4 vote of the council and as two-thirds rote would be necessary to pass It over the may or s veto, further action is consid ered unlikely. The adjourned meeting; was call ed to receive bids on the improve ment of Stump and Birch streets with curbs and macadam streets. William D. Huffman and Louis H. Gohrke were tho only contractors submitting bids. Hoffman was i. warded the contract at $3 US as tgainst 13465.90 by Mr. Uohrke. Mr. Hoffman now has a concrete sidewalk contract In the city and is grading and curbing a block on Wnshlngton street. The matter of holding a round up hero on June 19, 20 and 21 was brought before tbe council, a June 21 la Sunday. There Is no ordinance regulating Sunday amusements, however. o the mat-( tcr was referred to the city at torney.
