Lee Duncan, an exconvlct, held In the county jail charged with the rob bery of four lnral stores, romped this morning after slugging Dep uty Sheriff George Sewell when the latter entered the cage where Duncan was confined to leave the man's breakfast.. Duncan rolled up his bedding in tha form of a dummy, to cause the officer to believe he wne anleep on bis cot. He then hid near the entrance and as Sewell entered struck him over the ho id with a heavy china tea cup wrnp ped up In an old sock. The offi cer was stunned, but grappled with Duncan, and the two fought for several minutca before the prisoner finally broke looae and escaped. The deputy tried to fol low, but was blinded with blood from the cuts on bia head and was unable to recapture the man. Other officers were immediate ly notified and started a search for the missing man. It la expect ed that be will be easily picked up as he roc aped without bat or coat. Duncan waa arrested at Marh- fleld charged with robberies there Ho was brought back to Rose burg whero officers stale that they have connected him with the robbery of four stores early id the month. He was being held for the grand jury at the time of his escape. He previously served one year tn the state penitentiary un der the name of Harper, for the crimeof burglary. Duncan nerved time In the Oregon peni'entiary as R. C. Har per and had a bad prison record, according to Warden Dalrymple. He waa sent up from Multnomah county fur forgery February in lf24, to serve a year. He escaped October 18 last, but was caught and returned November 22. He waa discharged March 23 In it after having served his sentence including time for demerits due to his escap. He was a trusty at the time ot his escape.
