Never was such an opportunity offered the residents of the Willamette valley for uniting the welfare of the
farmers, the laboring people and investors-" in a purely home enterprise such as is offered by the Oregon Linen
Mill which will be built in Salem. The farmers get an ad ditional money crop that has been tested out and for the
harvesting of which practical machinery has been perfected the flax pulling machine. The small farmers who
want to pull their crop by hand labor can do so. Flax cro ps all the way from a quarter of an acre to a hundred acres
are made possible. Good roads and truck hauling make the crop one that can be raised at any distance from the
Linen Mill. -
Everybody Should Subscribe
The capital to establish this industry should come from all the people who can take stock on the instalment
plan. There is not a business man or farmer or truck or berry grower who cannot take a few shares of stock and
pay for it on the instalment plan that has been decided upon. All large industries are tending to go into the
hands of a large number of small investors and the Linen Mill should be owned by the largest number possible.
Employment For Men, Women and Young People
Farmers to grow the raw material and investors to make the big undertaking possible are the two biggest
factors. The employment of family labor in the industry itself is the third big factor. . That is of the utmost
importance to the people living in the cities and suburbs. Those industries that employ men, women and young
people are the foundation of community prosperity and the main reason why Salem ranks high as a wage-earning
and home-building city. There is no more beautiful or prosperous town of its class in the United States and all
the people have faith in its future on industrial lines. Every month in the year hundreds of thousands of dollars
of Salem money are invested in oil stocks, mining stocks, industrial and non-taxable securities. If Salem people
will concentrate their investments for a single month o n the Linen Mill a purely local enterprise which has
everything in favor of its becoming as great a success and profit winner as the saw mill, the woolen mill and
the paper mill this great offering for progress will succeed.
Putting Salem On the Map
Salem for many years had the unenviable reputation
of being a "slow" town but it has lived down that name.
If the stock subscription for the Oregon Linen Mill is
taken quickly and without any effort, it will advertise
Salem all over the United States, due to the fact that it
has become the central point for the development of the
linen industry which is a business of natural proportions.
This mill will be followed by other mills, not only in
Salem- but throughout the Willamette valley. The effect
this will have on real estate values in the next few years,
in both farm and city property, can hardly be estimated.
With such an opportunity before us we cannot afford to
hesitate. The importance and magnitude of the results
to be obtained from this will effect every working man,
every business, every property owner and every farmer
in western Oregon. Let us once and for all change the
title of a "slow" town which used to apply to Salem and
erase it forever by the speed and spirit with which we put
over the Oregon Linen Mill.
