Don Byrd returned yes terday to her home in Portland after spending several days of last week as the guest of friends and relatives. Several delightful affairs were given for Mm. Byrd. On Wednesday Mrs. Richard Sla ter entertained at a bridge tea honoring Mra. Byrd. Guests of Mm. Slater were Mm. Byrd, the honor guest, Mrs. Prince Byrd, Mrs. Frederick Deck ebach, Mrs. Homer Egan, Mrs. Clifford Farmer. Mra. Gus Hix eon, Mrs. Karl Beckc, Mra. Claude Steiiflloff, Mrs. Donald Youn'f and Mm. Miss Patter son is a sophomore and a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. The March committee of the ladies aid society of the Leslie Methodist church was hostess on Friday evening to members of the church in the church parlors, with a program followed by a so cial hour. In charge of the evening were Mrs. H. M. Pemberton, Mra. A. C. Bohrnntedt, Mra. C. A. Arpke and Mra. Fred Scott. Mm. W. F. Mc Call, president of the society, in troduced the chairman. Members of the W. C. T. U. and all those who have worn a white ribbon will meet at the W. C. T. U. hnll tomorrow for a big home cqming meeting. Mrs. F. A. Legge will be hoet em tit is evening in her home at 1499 State etrcet to the Senior Standard Bearers of the First Methodist church. , The formation of a social and study club, to be known as the A. C. S. club was effected by a group of a dozen women who met on Friday at the home of Mrs. Wil liam E. McCarrol on Maple ave nue. It was decided to take up the study courses on local, state and national government sent out by the National League of Women Voters and Mra. W. F. Fargo ex plained the courses briefly. Mrs. Fargo was a special guest at the meeting. Mra C. M. Oglesby was elected president of the new club and Mre. McCarrol will serve ae sec retary and treasurer. The club will meet again on Friday at the McCarrol borne. Mm. Lester Kearns of Portland, spent the week end with her par ents, Mr. and Mm. Walter Buch-ner. The sixth quinquennial conven tion of the International Council, of Women to be held In Washing-; ton. D. C, May 4-14 will be the largest and most important gath ering of women ever held in the world. It Is believed. Delegates representing every civilized coun try of the world will attend. The international council includes in ite membership councils of 36 countries of the world, with a membership of 36,000,000 women The meeting is being held in America for the fimt time at the invitation of the National Coun cil of Women of America, wbich includes 38 of the most represent ative national organizations in the country, with a membership of 12,000.000 women. The Marchioness of Aberdeen. president of the Internitlonal Council of Women, will preside at the session, which will be held in the new Washington auditor ium, which has just been com pleted. Subjects for consideration will be permanent peace. Internation al arbitration. Immigration hnd emigration, education, child vel fare, equal moral ,-irtandards, the industrial position of women and kindred subjects. Many Portland women are plan ning to attend, among them Mrs. Charles Runyon and Miss Adelia Prichard, national president of the Business and Professional Women's federation; Mrs. Julius L. Lou i won, Mra. M. Baruh and Mrs. Horace B. Fischer. Oregon- ian. Chcmoketa chapter. Daughters of the American Revolution will be entertained at a one o'clock luncheon nt the country home of Mrs. Homer Gouley on Saturday. Assisting Mrs. Gouley as hostess es will be Mre. Alton D. Hurley, Mm. John B. Rrkin of Dallas, Mrs. Carey Martin, Mm. Anna Fisher and Mre. E. M. Hoffnell. During the program hour Mm Isaac Lee Patterson will give a paper on Sulgrave Manor, the Washington ancestral home in England. Mm. R. E. Downing is hostess today to the members of the Kound-up club. i mm The You us Married People's claes of the First Baptist church will entertain at an April Fool's party on Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Smither, 880 north Church street, beginning at eight o'clock. A group of clever and unusual games and stunts have been ar ranged by the committee in charge. All young married people will be welcomed to the party. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clemenson and two children, Betty and Bob, and Charles Clemenson, motorists from Loa Angeles, were the Pguosta last week of Mr. and Mra. Charles Oglesby. Salem Girl Reserves at Conference Miss Helen Campbell of Salem, president of the Oregon district of the girl reserves, presided over the state conference held in Van couver, Washington, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Other dele gates from Salem were Mies Llna Heist, advieor. Miss Minnie Shrode, Mies Rosalie Buren, Miss Gaynelle Beckett, Miss Eloise Wright, Misa Margaret Townsend, Misa Alberta Boh runted t, Mies Marvelle Edwards, Mij Elisabeth Wechter, Miss Jean Campbell, Miss Julia Currie and Mies Hope Crowthcr. Delegates unable to attend were Miss Rosaline Van Winkle, Miss Pauline Welch and Miss Dorothy Hutchason. Chief executive of the confer ence was Miss Ruth Walter of Vancouver. Another Salem girl, Mies Jennelle Vandevort, acted as official song leader of the confer ence. Miss Jean Campbell was ac companist. The conference opened Friday evening. Delegation introductions and presentation of theme of the conference "Light" was made by Mies Walter. At a session Sat urday morning Prof. Charles Shumway, superintendent of schools in Vancouver, gave a short address. Luncheon was served the group at the high school. In the afternoon the high school presented a short musical play for the pleasure of delegates. Election of officers and the decis ion to omit the Oregon conference at Gearhart this year and hold the state conference at Seabeck were the important business items settled during the afternoon ses sion. Miss Beulah Porter of Van couver, was elected president of the Oregon district for the com ing year. Two hundred and fifty girls from Portland, Astoria, Eugene, Mosier, Salem, Vancouver, Forest Grove, Mill Plain, The Dalles, Hillsboro, McMinnvilte and Stay ton attended the conference. Judge and Mrs. Harry Belt spent the week end at their cot tage at Pacific city. The modern tendencies In lit erature, the manner in which lit erature delineate the age, and the method of studying literature were ably presented to a group of interested listeners on Saturday when Barry Cerf, head of the department of modern literature at Reed college, addressed the Sa lem Woman's club at a social meeting at the club houte. It proved to be one of the most in terestiug meetings of the year. Preceding Mr. Cerf's address Miss Helen Poling of Albany, member of the music department of Albany college, sang delight fully "Sacrament and "Silver Ring.' At the close of the pro gram Mictt Poling sang "Trees' and "There is No Death." Accom panying her was Mies Helen Cap Its, of Portland, a gifted pi anist. During the tea hour Mrs. T. G.
