SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1925 SALEM HIGH DISTRICT DEBATE Salem hlch school won the dis trict championship in debate last night y a one point margin when the local team defeated Woodbura high by a unanimou decision at Salem and lost to Albany by a split decision at Albany. The final count stood Salem 4, Albany 3 anJ Woodbura 2. Wuoaburn defeated Albany 2 to 1 In the third corner of the triangle, held at Woodburn. Affirmative teams traveled. Iu the contest held at the local high school auditorium Avery Thompson and Margaret Pro, com prising the Salem negative team, had little difficulty In disposing of the arguments presented by the Woodburn affirmative, consisting of Harold Ewalt and Betty Ballllo. Homer Richards and Thomas Childs composed the Salem affirm ative team which lost to the strong Albany aggregation by a one-point margin. The one Judge's vote at Albany was all that saved the locals from defeat. It the de cision had been unanimous the final count would nave placed Al bany one notch above Salem The Question was, "Resolved, That a strong third party would promote the intereata of good gov ernment in the United States. Pending word from Salem. Massachusetts, the local debate authorities are not definitely de elded as to what course to take next. There is no Intention of withdrawing from the inter flistrlc. debates to which Salem is lliRlble by virtue of last night's victory, but in case the debate ma terialises between the high schools of the two Salems It looms as a probability that the strongest pos sible team will immediately begin work to represent the locals. Such action would hamper Salem's chances In the state contest, but Orlando Horning, debate coach, has indicated that even In case a weaker team should prepare on the state question, euch a team would probably be able to work up a stronger case Ibsn his strongest possible team, working on two Questions. In any case the con test with the eastern school Is bound to hamper the local's chances for the Oregon state cham pionship, It is said, but school au thorities believe that the benefit to Salem of an Interactional de bate wil ltar surpass the benefits of winning state honors another year.
