TWO HOLD UP MEN
KILLED IN ROBBERY
Los Angeles, cai., Feb. 28.
Hwo holdup men, attempting the
robbery of a drug store in the res
idential district here last night,
were shot and killed by police de
tectives who had ben tipped off
two weeks ago and lay in wait at
the store. According to the de
tectives, the men attempted to
shoot when they say tbey were
tru ed but were laid low before
they could fire.
One of the men was recognised
by detectives as James W. Morely,
former member of the police
force, while a letter from Toronto.
Canada, found on the other's per
son indicated hia Identity as James
K. Grayson. Both men were about
25 years of age.

TUCKER BILL AS
STEP BACKWARD
Gove, nor Pierce has vetoed the
Tucker bill providing that both
men and women applying for mar
riage license shall tile affidavits
that they are free from Infectious
diseases.
"We today have a law," says
the veto message, "which compels
the male applicaut for a marriage
license to secure a certificate from
a practicing physician that he is
free from contagious or infectious
venereal disease.
"This bill la a step backward
The applicants for the marrlugu
license, being Interested parties,
are not the proper persons to make
the affidavit. It opens the way to
easy perjury. The law should be
made more drastic and severe In
stead of being rendered valueless,
aa would be the case if this bill
became a law,
"I would gladly sign a bill mak
ing ttao present law more effective,
but I refuse to be a party to break
ing down and making the existing
laf Inoperative, for It has accom
plished some good." j
