The majority mem bers of the two committees fought the proposition, thereby leaving the bill to the governor. Following the chief executive's message to the house this morning. Representative Gordon moved for recalling the bill from the gover nor in order that the bouse might reconsider It. The more was sharply opposed by Representative Swan, Linn county, but carried. The bill was finally laid on the table for ac tion this afternoon. Representative Coffey, a mem ber of the house roads and high ways committee, who has con sistently fought against putting excessive rates Into the measure, pointed out that all tho work of the committees ot the two houses would have gone for nothing If the bill with Its present high rates were vetoed. . Representative Shclton, of Baker, attempted to block recon sideration ot the measure by mov ing that the house reconsider Its action in recalling the bill, there. by sendlug it back to the governor n changed. His motion lost. Speaker Burdlck took the floor to urge reconsideration. ''The governor's message serves notice that he will veto the bill in Its present form," he explained. Representative Graham em phasized the Importance ot estab lishing the principles laid down n the bill and pleaded against sacrificing It by leaving the ex cessive rates In it. The house concurred In a con ference committee report estab lishing an extra fee of 50 per cent above regular charges on vehicles operated for commercial profit five miles beyond the cor porate limits of any city. The measure will tax peddlers', palt ers", butchers' ana outers ma chines operating from ctties out into the country and at present paying only regular vehicle fees. The house also adopted a con ference report setting the truck and load limit ot public highways at 20.000 pounds. The house had held for 22.000 pounds and the senate for 18,000.
