PETTYJOHN CO. 19 N, Commercial St. a MAYOR INTENDS HO CHANGE IN BOXING BOARD Mayor J. B. Gicsy is vexed over the misconstruction by persoua tu tor eat ed in the promotion ot box ing in Salem, of his attempt to huvo an ordinance druwa up to comply with the state law that w.cli city huvin boxing mutches or prize fights iu its Jurisdiction, be obliged to carry on these m. tches uud:r a boxing commis sion. The city attorney advises that the city bus never passed an ordi nance providing tor tho appoint ing ot a boxing commiiuiou. al though a boxing commission has been appointed, and has been act ing for several years. ' Members the Elks lodge, in 1920, circulated s petition for the incorporation ot tho fair grounds In the city limits, i; order that tuc city could permit boxing there, as i was the only logical place that coult1. theu be tuund tor bouU tfhich the Elks desired to put on for the entertainment ot visitors to their convention. It la Mayor Giesy'e coutjution that an ordi nance providing for a commission was then passed, but thorough search hns failed to bring the ordi nance to light. It is merely to remedy a techni cal flaw in the ciy administratiou ot boxing that Mayor Giesy had City Attorney Kowiu draw up tho ordinance which has stirred up such a protest among promoters, uvors the mayor. No attempts arc to be made to change tho order oi matchmaking now prevailing. In fact, Mayor Gieay has heartily en domed the work ot Harry Plant. Mayor Gieay has stated that he will not permit anything to be put ucross in the ordinance that will effect any chunre in existing con dltfons, hut will merely legalize tho appointing of a commission He hua decided to increase the membership of the commission to five, instead of uree, as the state law provides. Representatives Klrkwood, Lon organ, Cowcill, Huriburt and Woodward supported him. Kcpresentatfv i Bennett, of thel ways and means committee, fought the measure. Representative Wheeler, Lane county, also fought tha bill. Next Kept-cjentattve A. It. Hunt er ot Union got house bill 74, pro viding for an armory appropria tion for La Crande, withdrawn from tho table nnd put up for fin al passage. Chairman Gordon, of the ways nnd means, argued ugainst the sudden raid for armory appropriations. Ho warned that they would likely be vetoed. The house passed the bill ap propriating $40,000, providing that the suo. must be matched by private subscription. Commercial, b ORDERS PROBE OF SECRET FRATS The secret society problem at Salem high school assumed larger proportions than ever at last night's meeting ot the school board. The fact was made clear that societies exist in the school without the faculty knowledge and supervision necessary to keep the organisations from being con sidered secret societies, which are banned by state law. The reports, filed with the superintendeut of schools and presented by bim at the meeting, proved to be incomplete and in adequate lu every way, only two being of recent date, the other ten having been brought from the archives of the bcuooI. The two recent reports, and many ot the others, were found to be lacking faculty signatures. It seems to me that the reports mean nothing unless they carry the proper signatures," said W1I. Mam Gahtsdorf, member ot the board. The rumor has circulated with increasing persistence that many of the constitutions, even when filed, were not the actual constitutions ot tho societies fi ing theui, but mere forms worth nothing more than the paper upon which they were written. Action was taken by the board authorising the superintendent to investigate the situation com pletely and report at the board's next meeting. A complete list is to be secured ot tho membership of each organization together with an authentic, properly signed report ot tho constitction and by laws ot the society. The report is to be given at the next meeting of the school board. After tho meeting various board members expressed the opinion that the boat solution ot the problem would be to post the names ot all society members In a conspicuous place, with scholastic grades marked opposite each name.
