activity of these two mny not be
generally known, but are easily
explained.
General White, who has been
spending most of his time since
the session started in the lobby in
the interests of this legislation and
the various armory bills pending,
is the member of the commission
who has been most alve in seek
ing to have Major Simpson re
moved. What originally inspired
this antagonism on tho part of
White toward Simpson has never
heen oxplaine-1. It was principal
ly through the efforts of Whito
that Simpson was placed in the
bonus commission ns a member of
the staff, from which place he
succeeded to the acting secretary
hip upon the resignation f Allan
Hopkins, later bein- elected as
permanent secretary over the pro-
test of General White and Secre
tary of State Ko7.er, the minority
members.
Dallas Incident
White's fight upon Simpson de
veloped into its fullest intensity
when Simpson sought to discharge
from the staff of field agents of
the commission Ed Hamilton, of
Dallas, an active supporter of
White in tho national guard ma
chine the general has built up.
Simpton c'aarged Hamilton with
Insubordination, and stated that
if information which has been
given me proves true I will bring
other charges against Hamilton."
By an Investigation conducted by
a sub-committee of two commis
sioners named by tho governor the
charge of Insubordination was
sustained, but White's fight
against Simpson has been continu
ed. A situation now existing In
Clackamas county largely explalnb

Early laat year an ex-service
man, Orval M. Olds, of Oregon
City, applied to the commission
for a loan of $2000 on certain
property, with an additional1 loan
of $1000 upon completion of a
house on said property. The loan
was approved by the commission.
but In order for Olds to offer the
property clear of nl! incumber-
nnces, It was necessary that a mort
gage of $903, in favor of W. W.
Myers and wife, be paidoff.
Myers was not willing to rolense
this mortgage until actually in re
ceipt of the money, and Hammond,
for snme unexplained reason, dis
regarded tho usual procedure In
Buch cases and took it upon him
self, through a joint note signed
by himself and Orval Olds In fa
vor of an Oregon City bank to se
cure a loan of $003 to pay oft the
mortgage. With this money Ham
mond satisfied the Myers mort
gage.

In the meantime Myers had

er, alleging that he had loaned
some $20,000 to Fi. D. Olds and
that Orval Olds and his brother
were silent partners of K. D. Old
and that they secured the benefits
of the loan and that the deed.) of

the same be cancelled.
