Garland, chairman of the state prohibition department Inrestlga tion committee, denying that Elisha A. Baker, president of the Oregon Anti-Saloon league and attorney for tbat organisation represented Van Winkle's office when he advised George L. Clear er In the affair growing out of Cleaver's raid of the British ship, London Merchant. In his testimony before the committee Cleaver stated that Ba ker as an awisfant attorney gen eral wrote the apology that Cleav er signed after the raid. Mr, Van Winkle says: "I read in the press of yester day that Mr. Cleaver, state prolii bltion commlmloner, testified be fore your committee tbat In con nection with his search ot the British steamship 'London Mer chant and- his arrest by the fed eral authorities therefor, be wae advised and represented by Mr, Elieha A. Baker, president and attorney of the Anti-Saloon lea gue, and who, he stated, repre sented the attorney general. "The lost portion of that state ment to the effect that Mr. Baker represented the attorney general in that proceeding la untrue. Neither Mr. Baker nor any one else represented me in that mat ter. "Mr. Cleaver called me on the telephone and aaked if I could represent him, and I Informed him, on the account of the nature ot the proceedings I could not He asked it he would be juetlfied in securing other counsel and I informed him that he was at lib erty to do so. He then asked it R would be all right to secure the services of Mr. Baker. I told him so far as I was concerned 11 would, but that he would rep re sent him and not me.
