PAGE TEN -HE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 1925 BEARCATS LOSE SE In a ianie the result of which wm In doubt until th final gun numwd. the Whitman college bas ketball quintet last night defeated the Willamette university as;grega tion by a score of 17 to S4. A dis organised Willamette defense, through which the Missionaries often had Utile difficulty In pass ing, was largely responsible for the Bearcats' defeat. Especially during the first half only the dlffl cutty with which the Whitman players located the basket saved the Willamette team from being defeated by a larger margin. . On the other hand, the develop ment shown by Roberts m and Em mel was Impressive. Robertson made saveral beautiful basket from nearly faa!f the length of the floor and Emmel, at the opening of the season doped to be hardly varsity calibre, held hla own with the best of them on the floor. Fasna-ht and Ericson played with their usunl form. Too many personal fouls caused Hartley, Willamette center, to be Jerked early in tho second half, thereby virtually sewing the game op for Whitman, gtolzhelse, who Went In at center, did the best he could, but showed an Inability to get the ball on the tip-off, as well M general lack of experience on the floor. . Willamette led In scoring twice during tho game. The first period ended with Whitman one point In the lead, the count . being It to 18. At no time during the tilt was , Whitman more than three baskets ahead of the Bearcats. BERNHAlTSCHROEDER POLK'S BEST SCHOLAR Dallas, Or., Jan. 29.
