PAGE TEN MYSTERY STILL VEILS SLAYING OF DUMB Kansas City, Mo., March 21. Seeking to pierce the veil of mys tery which Burrounds the slaylnK ot Dr. Zoe Wllklne. whose gamine at love and Intrigue ended in grewsome death, police today faced a number of unfolding leads. These Involved a mysterious Quartet whom the woman reared, an equally mysterious sanitarium "deal," and the knowledge that Slllard Davies, negro janitor, wielded an unexplained influence over Dr. Wilkins. But all the avenues pursued rc volved in some manner about the neero who had heard his employ er talk about jewels and valuable papers and who is alleged to have owned the rusty pocket knifu found beside her mutilated bony, Davies is known to have domi nated the woman on certain occa-1 sions and once, it alleged, Mtempt ed an assault upon her. When, on Saturday night, Dr. Wilkins was distraught with fear that "four persons" would kill her unlesss he put through a sanitar ium "deal" of which the police have been unable to learn any thing, the negro ordered Dr. Wil kins to dismiss a woman who had been summoned to the house as a companion. -. -ufetic: It was to this woman, whoso name has not been mvuiged, that Dr. Wilkins confided her fear that she would be killed by the mys tery quartet. "Get this woman out of the , house before it 1b too late," the negro is said to have exclaimed. , "I won't wait any longer. I can't." The woman left and the negro remained. Arriving home the woman telephoned but wan tolil the receiver at Dr. Wilkins- nome was off tho hook. The next oay she called and found the house ap parently deserted. On Tuesday evening Dr. Wil kins' body was found on the floor of her parlor. In a long grilling Davies stead fastly maintained that he had not been at Wilkins since 5 o'clock Saturday. He denied any knowl edge of the slaying. CATERPILLAR ARMY HALTED Brawlev. Cal.. March 21. The oil film killed the insects morn effectually than poison. CALLED BY DEATH After a lingering illnesB, Mrs. George H. Burnett, wife of Justice Burnett of the Oregon supreme court, passed away here yester day afternoon at 6:30 o'clock. Mrs. Burnett was born April t, 1856, and was the daughter ot Dr. and Mrs. Alfred M. Belt. On December 31, 1879, she became the wife of George H. Burnett. Three years later they establish ed a residence at 385 north High street where she lived until her death. Mrs. Burnett was the first ma tron of Chadwlck chapter 87, Or der of Eastern Star, which will have full charge of the funeral services to be held from the Webb funeral parlors Saturday mo-n-Ing at 10:30 o'clock. The remains will be sent to Portland for cre mation. At the time of her death she was worthy high priestess of Wil lamette Bhrlne No. 2, White Shrine of Jerusalem.- There are no children.
