The state of North Dakota today went into the elevator and (lour milling business when Its $ 2,600, -000 mill and elevator was formal ly opened here. Governor Nestos pressed a but ton setting In motion machinery la the 'flour mill, which eventu ally will have a capacity of 2,000 barrels a day. One unit of the mill, with a dally capacity of 1,000 barrels, was placed in operation today. A eecond unit the same capacity will be ready in about three weeks and the third 1,000 barrels capacity which will be used for grinding durum wheat exclusively, will be finished shortly afterwards. The mill and elevator projoct was part of the state industrial program jnaugurnted several Tears ago by the state officials elected with non-partisan league endorsement. The league spon sored the movement. CAR CURTAIN, CUSHION, CUT Police were today asked by Ilobert Ramsden, 395 North Nine teenth street, to attempt to locate the Individual who, last night, maliciously damaged his automo bile. The cushions and curtains of his car were cut in strips with a knife, he said. A hole also was cut in the top of the car. Ramsden said he was at a loss to discover a motive for the act. roliee promised to assist him In an effort to find the person who used the knife. TURKISH GUM . IN BULGARIAN WATERS Constantinople, Oct. 30. (By Associated Press.) A Turkish gunboat in the Black sea chased the Greek cargo steamer Andras, headed for Oulatz, near the mouth of the Danube, but the boat rushed at full speed to Burgas to avoid seizure. The Bulgarian press is clamoring over the appearance of Turkish naval forces along the Bulgarian coast. YAKIMA GRANGERS WANT TOBACCO BARRED Yakima, Wash., Oct. 30. Mem bers of the Riverside Pomona, at their meeting Saturday night in the lower valley, voted to petition the state legislature to ban all printed advertisements of tobacco from the state and to exclude from Washington all motion pic tures showing women enjoying the weed. The grangers also called upon the prosecuting attorney to declare void all agreements and contracts held by Japanese for the use or occupancy of land in the valley. A. S. Gobs, master of the state grange, attended the session. TEXAS OFFICIALS CITED TO COURT Dallas, Texas, Oct. 30. Motion requesting that S. L. Staples, sec retary of state, and W. A. Keeting, attorney general, , be cited to ap pear and show causal why they should not be held in contempt of court, was filed in the fifth court of civil appeals here today by W. W. Nelms of counSel for C. A. King and others. Austin, Texas, Oct. 30. A mo tion citing Attorney General Keet ing and Secretary of State S. L. Staples for contempt of court for certifying Earle B. Mayfleld"s name as democratic senatorial nominee before final action by the Navarro county district court has been prepared and will be filed at Corsicana unless the state offi cials take steps rescinding their action in certifying Mayfield's name, according to a message re ceived today by Attorney General Keeting from Luther Nickels, at torney for the antl-Mayfield faction. MAN HIT BY CAR NOT HURT E. L. Womelsdorf, 1644 Hall street, escaped injury Saturday when he was struck and knocked to the pavement by an automobile driven by Gwln, 1022 South Com merclal street. The accident occurred while Gwln was driving south on South Commercial street, according to the police report. CHAN BALL E DAY NGH T Tomorrow night is the annual ball of the Salem Cherrlans. It promises to be exceptionally bril liant. Scores of persons out-of-town men and women are to be the guests of the local boosters. Twenty Prunarlans, from up at Vancouver, Wash., accompanied by their wives, will arrive in Salem tomorrow for the dance. No less than a dozen Rosarians, from Portland, will be at the ball and there will be approximately 10 Berrians from Newberg. Cherrlans were today busy with final preparations. A committee, headed by E. Cooke Patton, worked steadily throughout the day. WILLAMETTE STUDENTS SUBSCRIBE $35,035 Returns from the pledges made by the classes of Willamette uni versity the latter part of last, week were completed this morning and show that there were 199 students subscribing a total of $35,035. ' The chapel period last Friday wast given over to the classes for private pledge meetings The freshman class turned In 62 sub scriptions totaling $4325 : and were closely followed by the senior class with 36 subscriptions total ing 4170. The sophomore class reported 66 subscriptions for a to tal of $3805. The juniors entered the laest number of pledges, 35 for a total of $2725. Oregon THREE HOBOES CRUSHED TO DEATH IN CAR Casper, Wyo., Oct. 30. Three men were crushed to death and two others injured when the car of lumber in which they were beating their way on Burlington freight train No. 76, eastbound, was converted into a death trap by the sudden shifting of the lumber while the train was switching last night at Powder River station, 40 miles west of Casper. The dead: C. E. Linden, 27, Oklahoma City; Charles Duncan, 42, Spo kane, Wash.; Frank Moran, 39, address unknown, carried United Mine Workers of America transfer card from Aguilar, Colo. OLCOTT TO SPEAK IN CORVALLIS TONIGHT Governor Olcott, who passed Sunday in Salem, resumed his gu bernatorial campaign in Benton county today. He will speak in Corvallls tonight. Tuesday after noon the governor will give an address at Hubbard while at night he will speak at Brownsville. ' Tht governor will speak at Oregon City Wednesday night and will close his southern Oregon tour at Rose burg Thursday. The governor will pass Friday, Saturday and Monday In Portland. - T. B. Kay of Salem will accom pany the governor to Brownsville, while Senator B. L. Eddy will share honors with the governor at Oregon City.
