Elizabeth Tyler, high in the coun
cils of the Ku Klux Klaa, played
a important part in the organ
Izatlon of "The Ladies of the In
visible Eye" who began operations
In Fort Worth, Texas, recently by
severely beating Mrs. I. H. Tatum,
an elderly woman. '
Although Mrs. Tyler, who
recently married a motion picture
man here, declined to make a
ttemeut t,oay, the information
was drawn from H. W. Evans, Im
perial Kllgraph of the Klan, that
several "Women's Auxiliaries"
have been formed In . Texas and
Oklahoma recently and that Mrs.
Tyler has handled a mass of cor
respondence with the state organ
izations. "These women's organisations,"
aid Evans, "were' founded along
principles identical with those of i
the klan, but none of the organ
lzatlons has, been, officially recog
nized by our empire yet. The Im
penal Kloncilium, when it meetB
in Atlanta In November, will take
steps to receive the women fra
ternities into the "klan" as auxil
iaries." ;
Both . Evans and P. L; Savage,
the klan's chief of staff, admitted
organizations' of women ' in
sympathy with the klan have cor
responded with Imperial Head
quarters for several months, but
declared these women Would have
no official connection with the
Klan until the Kloncllium meets.
Asked what part Mrs. Tyler took
in forming the organization,
Jvans said:

many months in getting the. wo
men together. She thought the
Southwestern States would be best
to start in, and her idea was to
speak to other sections later."

world has won its battle against
sleeping sicuness was an
nounced yesterday to some 3000
German physicists and physicians
attending the centennial of the
physicists' association of Germany.

ered in a laboratory near Cologne.
He cited two cases of sleeping
sickness that had been cured with

evening. Mr. Parker is an experi

under his management the people
of Dallas and vicinity are assured
of the best service that it is pos
sible to give. He now operates
large passenger busses between
Salem and Silverton and also be
tween Salem, Silverton and Mon-
mo'uth. It Is his Intention to place
a 14-passenger bus on the Salem
Dallas run.

dent Harding today issued a' pro
clamation designating Monday,
October 9, as National Fire Pre
vention day. The fire waste in
the United States year after year,
the president declared, reaches
appalling figures- which are not
approaohed in any other country.

custom to observe October 9, anni
versary of the great Chicago fire
of 1871, as National Fire Preven
tion day; and in recognition of
this . excellent precedent, I am
herewith directing the, attention
jf all citizens, especially those in
authority In the state and cities,
to the desirability of continuing
the observance this year and mak
ing it Impressive.' ';
''It has long been in a reproach
to our country that by,reason' of
poor construction, inadequate fa
cilities for fire prevention, and
an all too general carelessness
about possible' causes of conflagra
tion .our fire waste reaches fle-
ures year after year '' which are
not approached in any other coun
try in the world. Mindful of the
fire waste whlph is expressed in
figures so huge as to be ppalling:
it may Be emphasized that ' in
times when all communities need
to conserve resources in hand and
to promote production in every
possible way, there ought to be
especial effort to minimize such
losses."
For the first time in the history
of Willamette ' university there
are now over 200 men registered
At the time the books closed last
night there were 204 men listed
for courses. ' It is thought that
the next two weeks will show an
increase in the number as many
are still working on farms or in
the fruit orchards. . -
There are now registered at the
university a total of 477 students.
Of the number 273 are women and
204 men. Of the fifty-eight that
registered yesterday, forty were
men and eighteen women.

stein theory of relativity will be
on trial today.
The test will be made by expedi
tions which have gone to Austra
lia to make, observations during a
five-minute eclipse of the sun.
American, English, German and
Dutch scientists are included in
the several parties. The track-of
the total eclipse is along the In
dian; ocean and through the heart
of Australia.
An expendition from the Lick
observatory, California, Is on the
west coast of Australia. , Others
are on Christmas island, west of
Australia, and one has penetrated
