PAGE SIX HOP PICKING : IN FULL BLAST BY SEPTEMBERl Dallas Or., Aug. 26. One ol Polk county's principal Industries hop picking will be on In full force bv Friday, September 1, and from then on until the end of the season things will be humming, especially In the vicinity of Inde pendence, which Is the hop center of the county. ' On Friday the b. Clemens Horst company. C. A. McLaughlin, V. r. McCarthy and a number of others are planning to start operations on the cluster hops. Last week the Wigrich ranch started picking what is known as fuggles with a five section crew and by this time have finished with the early hops The picking of the clusters will start with a greatly Increased force. A number of the growers started picking Monday. In. fact the harvest might be said to be on in real earnest right now. The season is opening a few days surlier than ordinarily, but the hops appear to ba in good condl tion for harvesting. Yield Is Heavier. The yield at the big Wigrich ranch is said to be heavier than that of last year and a heavy in crease In the late hops Is looked for. Virell DeCoster had a most creditable showing of the early horw. Picking at his yard has been completed. From 27 acres his yield was in the neighborhood nt 1800 nounds to the acre. This la regarded as an exceptionally good showing for fuggles. The picking! of early hops has also been finished at the yards of (the j. R. Cooper estate and Henry Ruch. Crowding Independence. Hop pickers are beginning o rowd into Independence and be fore the season closes it is esti mated that there will be at least 6000 of them In that vicinity. These plckerse are being located on arrival, but the big crowds will all be in by this week. In the eastern end of Dallas Is located the yard of Ike Yoakum, who will start picking the first of the month. He will employ about 40 pickers and his season will last about 12 days. Mr. Funk, who has toeen staying at the headquarters camp near New Grand Ronde fo some time, ; returned from "Portland and vias accompanied by Norman Slines, W. J. Lauderback and Chauncey McCormick of Chicago, 111., Ellis Bragg and C, H. Davis of Vancou ver, B. C, and Emery Olmatead of Portland. Others in the party were Clarence Olmstead, H. M. JohnBton and D. Lauderback. The gentlemen from Chicago are interested In the Mlama cor poration, Davis and Bragg repre sent holders of timber interests in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Mr. Olmstead is presi dent of the Northwestern Nation al bank of Portland, also a stock holder In the New Grand Ronde bank, as is also Mr. McCormick. The party spent several days In the vicinity of New Grand Ronde. giving that new town a careful inspection, visiting at the logging camps and acquainting theniBelvo with the developments that have so far been made. Their visit at this time is Judged slgnlfcant as It will undoubtedly tend toward further expansion and . improve ments. DAUGHTERS PLACE" MEMORIAL IN PARK The Daughters of the American Revolution of Salem placed a large boulder in Willson park op posite Waller hall yesterday to mark the old pioneer trail through Salem and to honor those respon sible for the founding of Oregon. The work of moving the boulder from Us original resting place in the park was In charge of J. C. Jones. It Is estimated that the monument weighs approximate three tons. . According to the members of the local Chemeketa chapter ol the D. A. R., services dedicating and placing a bronxe tablet on the boulder will be held early in October. Jazz Music Makes Cows Give More Milk Says Band Manager Bfcnta Monica, Cal., Aug. 26. Jazz music makes cows give more and better milk, accord ing to Walter O. Brooks, busi ness manager of a brass band maintained by employes of a dairy company here. Brooks declared that since 1921, when the band was or ganized, the cows have broken all records for giving milk. "The more proficient we be came and the more harmony and pep we put into our selec tions, the more the milk pro duction Increased," Brooks declared.
