GAY MACLAEEN
Miss Renska Swart, treasurer of
the Salem Arts League, Is enthus
iastic over reports of the ticket
committee for the Gay McLaren
performance, scheduled for the
Grand theatre, January 31. From
the heads of varioug sections
come similar statements, all prov
ing beyond doubt that the Salem
pubic, always on the lookout for
something v new and interesting,
is backing the league in its
effort to bring to the city some
thing combining these character
istics with real art and extraord
inary talent.
Extraordinary Miss McLaren
certainly is. Her brilliant ver
satility and heretofore unheard
of genius has won for her some
remarkable press notices and fea
ture articles in eastern newspap
ers and magazines. A syndicate
article appearing several months
ago in the magazine supplement of
the Oregonian, featured her along
with some of the most noted act
resses of the day.
She is the only dramatic artist
in America who can impersonate
every known character. She im
personates the facial characteris
tics, voice and mannerisms of ev
ery actor and actress in this
country, and aB a repertoire of
over thirty plays. In her appear
ance here, Miss McLaren will pro
sent, "Enter Madame," one of the
latest Broadway successes.

Tftiere is a little uncertainty con

been holding large quantities of
eggs and have sent no specific
quotation to Salem shippers. The
highest retail price today was 35
cfnts.
Sugar took another rise today
and is now selling for $6.20 a
sack or -more. An increase was
announced yesterday la the price
of refineries.
Halibut has increased to 35
cents a pound, because of scarci
ty and because there is no compe
tition in the salmon market.
: By shopping about a bit the
housewife can obtain real eastern
