findings to the present special ses
sion of the legislative assembly, or

islative approval of the position

Mr. Hoff's position has been
that of unalterable opposition to
the proposed Site, on the grounds
that it does not include suitable
agricultural land necessary to the
efficient operation of such a plant
as the boys' training school, that
the character and lay of the land
is such as to make the construc
tion of the new school plant there
unnecessarily expensive, and that
the close proximity to the state
tubreculosis hospital, asylum farm
and penitentiary make the site one
of poor environment for the boys
to be housed in the school.
In his resolution Davey Justifies
the selection of the site by the
provisions of the legislative act
appropriating the money for the
school, which provides that the
new school shall be built on state
lands.

Oyster Beds

Olympia, Wash., Dec. 21. A
freezing north wind, coupled with
extremely low tides is causing se
vere damage to the Sound oyster
beds near Olympia, according to
reports reaching here yesterday
and today. The recent flood wat
er is said to have damaged dikes at
several beds making it impossible
to keep water over the oysters at
low tide to protect them from the
freezing temperature.

bay, Shelteh bay and North bay
declare they have suffered heavy
losses and reports would Indicate
that the damage may total several
thousand of dollars. D. K. Helser,
proprietor of a local oyster con
cern, said today that' thousands
of oysters have been killed by the
freezing temperature.
The beds located on the Sound
have been rich and healthy and
have yielded large quantities of
the Olympia oysters. Continued
cold may destroy some of the rich
est beds of the locality, it Is said.
The value of Eugene property
is $8,398,200, and that of Lane
county $34,786,997. Eugene's tax
levy will be 53.8 mills as against
52.2 mills last year.
35,000 Germans
to Ask Papers as

Paris, Oec. 21. About 35,000
Germans, residing in Alsace-Lorraine,
will ask to change their na
tionality and become Freeh it is
estimated by officials in the recon
quered provinces.
By a provision of the treaty of
Versailles all Germans who resid
ed in Alsace-Lorraine before Au
gust 3, 1914, and who remained
there uninterruptedly for at least
three years during the war are
now entitled to ask for French
naturalization papers. All the de
mands will be subjected to close
scrutiny and Germans suspected
of retaining hostile sentiments to
ward France will be denied natur
alization.
