Revelatlona of liquor smuggling by students of Dartmouth college are expected at the trial of Robert T. Meads, Junior, of Lagrange, 111., which op ened here recently. Meads is charged with the mur der of Henry E. Maroney, of West Medford, Mass., a semor, who was shot to death on June 16 In his room at the Theta Delta Chi house. Dartmouth, a few days before graduation. Meads confessed to the shooting, which he alleged followed a quar rel over an alleged sale of liquor. He claims he shot in self dfense. Abert H. Meads, who Is defend ing his son, declares he has affi davits to substantiate the claim that bootlegging at the college was common. The elder Meads has de manded the resignation of Presi dent Ernest M. Hopkins. Charges of wholesale bootleg ging made by the Illinois lawyer were denied by the faculty andt tother officials at Dartmouth. Pres ident Hopkins said that young Meads was a member of the only group of bootleggers in the Insti tution and that In his arrest the authorltels had "put their finger on the one definite spot." Both the slain student and Meads served In the world war. It was said that Meads, with companions, brought liquor over the border from Canada In lot ranging as high as seventy-two quarts at a time, paying $2.75 a. quart in Montreal and selling at $12 a quart. A hoard of nearly one hundred quarts was found In North Massa chusetts, the college dormitory In which Meads roomed. The account given by Howard W. Whltaker, of Somerville, Ha roney's roommate and the only witness of the shooting, follows: A group of three students sat late with Maroney In his room on the night of June 15. preparing for examinations. They wore Whlt aker, James C. Chilcott, of Bangor, f. and itichnrd H. Hart, of Chi cago. It was after midnight when Maroney suggested calling on Heads to buy a drink. Hart and Chilcott left the group and went tc bed, but Whltaker and Maroney went to North Massachusetts and found Meads In his room on the ground floor. Meads was drink ing, Whltaker said, and there were several empty bottles in the room. The two visitors told him that they had $8 between them ana bargained for the liquor. brought out a bottle in which n ( said there was $12 worth, and pre pared to pour. Maroney. accord ing to Whltaker. seised tho bottle and passed It to him, ordering him to "beat It." Whitaker jumped out of the window, Maroney fol lowing suit, and both ran. Meads seized a revolver and fired four shots out of the window after ihm. but failed to wnnc rr,i.., ..tn..l their room in i iicj f it v house, took a a-'ieee, and began to prepare for bed. the- drink Alhativ.
