New alarm system at Enterprise State bank
Jaycee amateur rodeo. He
was awarded a new saddle
by the Davis Café of Enter-
prise. A total of 139 cow-
boys participated in the rid-
ing and roping events.
92 golfers participated at
the 12th annual Enterprise
Elks’ Handicap 36-hole Golf
Tournament. Dick Quinn
was the top golfer with a low
gross score of 146 (without
handicap). Ray Milligan
of Enterprise was second
to Quinn with a 153 score.
Low net score for the Elks’
golf tourney was made by
Bill Preece of Enterprise,
who turned in a score of 138.

July 14, 1921
Right of way deeds for a
new road out of Enterprise
were accepted by the county
court last week and it was
declared a public highway.
It will give a straight road
from the court house south
nearly to the mountains, run-
ning on section lines.
A new electric alarm sys-
tem is being installed to pro-
tect the vault of the Enter-
prise State bank. It is so
designed that it is believed
it will be practically impos-
sible to break into the vault
day or night.
Press Self, who has a
tobacco, confectionery and
shoe shining shop on Main
Street just west of West
First, was arrested yester-
day and charged with selling
cigarets to boys. He pleaded
guilty and was fi ned $25.
The Wallowa sidewalk
contract has been practically
fi nished. Concrete walks and
curbs have been built in the
principal streets of town and
a new bridge constructed
across the mill race.

Fire danger level
moves to ‘Extreme’
Chieftain staff
Fire danger level in the
Wallowa-Whitman National
Forest was moved to
“Extreme” on July 8.
The move was made
as conditions continue to
remain hot and dry across
much of the west.
Additional fi re-preven-
tion measures take place
as a result of the move to
extreme, or Industrial Fire
Precaution Level 4.
According to a press
release from the U.S. For-
est Service, the IPFL 4 mea-
sures add the following
restrictions:
• Chain saw and power
saw use is not allowed.
• Tractor, skidder, fell-
er-buncher or shovel logging
operations are not allowed,
nor are mechanized loading
operations, hauling of any
product or material, cable
yarding, or blasting.
• Welding, metal cutting,
or any other activities that
can produce or emit a spark
are not allowed.
Phase B public use
restrictions remain in place
for now. Rules under Phase
B are as follows, according

pits provided at developed
recreation sites, where all
fl ammable material should
be cleared 10 feet from the
edge of the pit, and the pit
should be free of overhang-
ing material.
• Anyone with a camp-
fi re must have a tool that can
serve as a shovel and at least
one gallon of water. Camp-
fi res must be attended at all
times and completely extin-
guished prior to leaving.
While campfi res are
still allowed in Wilderness
Areas, year-around restric-
tions in the Eagle Cap Wil-
derness prohibit campfi res
within 100 feet of any lakes
or posted wetlands. Camp-
fi res are also prohibited
within ¼ mile of the lakes
listed on the back of Eagle
Cap Wilderness permits.
As a reminder, year-
around campfi re restrictions
also apply to the Hells Can-
yon National Recreation
Area within a ¼ mile of the
Wild and Scenic portions of
the Snake River, from Hells
Canyon Dam to the Ore-
gon-Washington border.

He was born November 29, 1966 in Enterprise,

nurse who has been in
Honolulu ever since Pearl
Harbor, is expected to
arrive on a 60-day leave.
Mrs. Johnson was Wallowa
county’s fi rst county nurse
and has many friends here.

port next week to take part
in the air show and other
activities connected with
the dedication of the airport
during the Chief Joseph
Days celebration.
A Nez Perce hunter who
helped provide fresh elk
for the Wallowa Band Nez
Perce Powwow and Friend-
ship Feast a year ago has
been cited for a misde-
meanor game charge. The
evidence in the case was
consumed by hundreds of
people at the 1995 friend-
ship feast in Wallowa.
