Gerald Leon Crawford, long-time resident of
Joseph, peacefully passed to his place in heaven on
March 7, 2021 in his home. Born July 2, 1936 in Bak-
er, Oregon to Harry and Norma (Jensen) Crawford,
Gerald grew up in Baker, graduating Baker High
School in 1953 at sixteen. He immediately started
work at Oregon Lumber.
Gerald met (Mary) Lorraine Christman of North
Powder in 1955, and they married on October 5,
1956. The couple moved to Pilot Rock in 1957 where
Gerald worked at US Gypsum until 1962 when, tak-
ing a leap of faith, he enrolled at Eastern Oregon College moving his family
which now included two sons, to La Grande. By January 1, 1966, Gerald had
earned his Bachelor of Science in Education, graduating Cum Laude, and was
hired to teach in the Halfway Elementary School for the Pine Eagle School Dis-
trict. He attended summer school at San Jose State on a grant in 1968, and
earned a Master of Science Degree in Education from Eastern Oregon College
in 1972. The family moved to Joseph, Oregon in the summer of 1976 where
Gerald taught until 1994.
After retiring, Gerald enjoyed a happy and fulfilling life traveling
extensively with Lorraine across North America. He volunteered as an assis-
tant coach for Boys’ Golf and scorekeeper for Girls’ Basketball at Enterprise
High School.
Gerald contributed to his community through his over fifty-year mem-
bership in the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, serving in various state
offices and committees and as the Maxine Assembly’s Rainbow Dad and once as
State Rainbow Dad. He was also proud of his work as a forty-year member
of the Shrine, and the family would like any memorial contributions to be
made specifically to the Portland Shriners’ Hospital. Gerald enjoyed wood-
working, fishing, camping, hunting and golf. The Crawfords were members
of the Enterprise Community Church.
Survivors include: wife Lorraine, son Michael (Tammy), Enterprise; son
Darryl (Tammy), Cocololla; brother Donald (Beverly), Pendleton, grandson
(Michael)Bo (Catherine) Crawford of Las Vegas; grandson Kyle (Kate) Craw-
ford, Enterprise; granddaughter Chelsey (Jed), Tacoma; granddaughter Brandi
(Joey) Kent, Post Falls; and eight great-grandchildren.
Gerald was interred in the Prairie Creek Cemetery with a service
officiated by Archie Hook of Enterprise Community Church, assisted by the
Joseph Masonic Lodge. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 3, with
a potluck gathering behind the Enterprise Community Church starting at 2:00.
