By Ellen Morris Bishop Wallowa County Chieftain A GoFundMe account has been set up to help and support newlywed couple Nicole and Kenny Lathrop whose home was completely con- sumed by fi re on Thursday after- noon. The home and virtually all their pos- sessions were a total loss. The Lathrops, their dogs and their tuxedo cat, however, are all unharmed. A GoFundMe fundraiser was established on Friday to help the young couple. As of Sunday afternoon, the effort had raised more than $5,000 toward the $10,000 goal. Enterprise, Joseph, Lostine, and Wal- lowa fi re departments responded to the blaze which had engulfed the house by the time the fi rst fi re engine and tender arrived from Enterprise about 20 minutes after the fi re was reported. The Lostine Fire Department remained at the scene Thursday evening to ensure that the fi re was out and no further ignition would occur. Cause of the fi re has not yet been deter- mined. Wallowa County Emergency Ser- vices manager Paul Karvoski said that the fi re may have been caused by either a wood stove or electrical wiring. Patron Scholarships available from Wallowa Valley Arts Council & Josephy Center The Wallowa Valley Arts Council is pleased to offer new Patron Scholarships for emerging artists looking to take their craft to the next level. Two scholarships, each worth $600, are now open for interested appli- cants. Funded by the Ore- gon Community Founda- tion, and in partnership with the Josephy Center for Arts & Culture, the Patron Schol- arships are targeted to local artists who do not make a career out of their art, and are interested in greater engagement with their craft. Specifi cally, the scholar- ships encourage those from non-traditional or non-vi- sual mediums to apply, although all are welcome to submit an application, which involves three short essays and a brief portfo- lio of their work. The only requirement is that appli- cants be residents of Wal- lowa County. There is no age restriction. The deadline to submit is Friday, Novem- ber 1 at 5 PM.
