Wallowa teams shine at tourney Annual Wallowa Lions Tournament draws a crowd for both days By Paul Wahl Wallowa County Chieftain Wallowa High School girls varsity basketball team split the two games it played in the Wallowa Lions Tournament on Dec. 8-9. The team was in it until the end in a game Friday against Monument/Dayville. The Cougars came out on the tail end of a 49-60 score. Freshman Shanna Rae Tillery poured in 16 points for the Cougars, Jamie John- ston and Riley Ferré added nine each and Grace Pendarvis had six to lead the scoring. Wallowa was plagued by fouls –– three players were invited to sit on the bench during the game. Coach Annette Moeller said the team is making changes in its offense, and the learning curve has created the foul problem. The Cougars walked all over Hunting- ton on Saturday, finishing on top of a lop- sided 56-9 score. Wallowa also had defeated Huntington 21-12 on Dec. 1. Moeller said she used the game as an opportunity to teach basics. “Lots of players got playing time,” Moeller said. Johnston contributed 24 points to the victory, Tillery 8, Ella Moeller 6, Pendar- vis, Rylee Goller, Ferré and Ashlyn Young four each and Samantha Wightman and Bailey Hafer each had two. The Wallowa boys team won both of its matchups in Wallowa Lions Tourna- ment action. Friday the Cougars defeated Monu- ment/Dayville 49-60 and Saturday the team trumped Huntington, 39-33. Both teams begin league play on Dec. 15 traveling to Nixyaawii and hosting Griswald on Dec. 16. Enterprise High School boys basketball got off to a 2-1 start last week, winning big over Wallowa 54-40 on Nov. 30 and shining in a 59-38 win over Ione on Friday. The Outlaws then suf- fered a 59-49 loss to Irrigon on Saturday. Coach Larry Wells was pleased with his team’s performance. In the Wallowa game, Jimmy Wells led the Outlaw scoring with 16. Trent Walker had nine points. “We have 12 players and 10 scored,” Wells said. “It’s pretty good when you get 10 kids in the box score.” The Ione game saw Wells again leading the scoring with 14. Chris Bathke, Walker and Rylie Hayward each scored eight points. “We had 10 guys score points again,” Wells said. “It was a pretty standard game with Ione, but Irrigon was pretty fast and athletic,” Wells said. “They were really stacked with seniors. It was the battle of the seniors in that game,” the coach said. Wells again led the scoring with 15, followed by Walker with 9. Bathke had 8. “He did great,” Coach Wells said. “He’s a terrific defender too.” Nine players put points on the board. Wells described the game as helter-skelter with both teams using the press to their advantage. The Outlaws led by 10 at the end of the first quarter and by 2 at the half. By the end of the third, the team was down by 8. “It was pretty well fought,” Wells said. “It was closer than the 10-point spread. We gave them a few points at the end, trying to gamble and get ahead, but I’m proud of those kids.” The Outlaws play Friday and Saturday in the Pilot Rock Tournament in Pilot Rock. The girls hoops team also will travel to Pilot Rock. Oppo- nents for both teams are yet to be determined. The team plays again on Saturday against an opponent yet to be determined.
