A13 WEDNESDAY December 6, 2017 Outlaw teams win basketball openers Wallowa girls move to tournament play in Elgin By Paul Wahl Wallowa County Chieftain Wallowa and Enterprise boys and girls bas- ketball squads opened their season with back- to-back games at Wallowa High School Nov. 29. Both Enterprise teams took victories. The boys won, 54-40, and the girls hammered Wal- lowa, 71-26. Jamie Johnston led the scoring for the Cou- gars with 11, Ashlyn Young added 5 points, Riley Ferré 4, Grace Pendarvis and Shanna Rae Tillery two apiece and Josie Scott and Samantha Wightman scored one each. Cougar coach Annette Moeller said Enter- prise was considerably taller and more seasoned than the Wallowa team and added it was a good learning experience. No stats were available to the Chieftain on the boys game or for Enterprise girls. Wallowa girls played two games in the Elgin Lion’s Tournament Dec. 1-2. The Cougars smeared Huntington, 78-12, and lost to Elgin, 52-46. Moeller said the win over Huntington was a confidence-builder for her team and also allowed her try a variety of offensive and defen- sive strategies. “We worked a lot on offense and took the open shots,” Moeller said. Huntington had several exchange students on its team who were still learning the game, Moeller added. Johnston poured in 20 points in the game, Tillery and Ferré 14 each, Pendarvis 9, Young 6, Ella Moeller and Scott 4 each and Bailey Hafer and Rylee Goller had two apiece. Wallowa stuck close to a much larger Elgin team throughout the game with scores of 10-7, 20-28, 32-37 at the quarter-stops. Foul trouble was the undoing for the Cougars, Moeller said. Elgin had 41 free-throw attempts in the game to Wallowa’s 11. “We were able to make sure their three-point shooter wasn’t a dominant player in the game,” Moeller said. “We had a couple key shots that just would not drop.” Both Enterprise teams competed in the Ione Basketball Bonanza Dec. 1-2. The boys defeated Ione, 59-38, Friday and lost, 49-59, to Irrigon. The Lady Outlaws trounced Ione, 77-30, on Friday and lost to Irrigon on Saturday, 36-49.
