Kathleen (Kathy) Ellen Wadsworth March 29, 1949 –– Oct. 29, 2017 Kathleen (Kathy) Ellen Wadsworth was born on March 29, 1949, to Wilfred J. and RoseMary Hartman in St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise, Idaho. Her sister, Kristin, was born 3 years later and their father, Wilfred, died that same year. RoseMary remarried in May 1954 to Rich- ard N. Van Sickle. The family moved to Tren- ton, N.J., and later to La Grande where brother Mark was born in 1955. Four years later, the fam- ily moved to Portland where sister, Karin was born in 1959. The family relocated to Renton, Wash., in 1960 where Richard had a job with Boeing. Kathy attended school in Renton graduating from Renton High School in 1967. She attended several years of col- lege at Green River Commu- nity College in Auburn, Wash. In August 1973, she mar- Wadsworth ried Robert A. Wadsworth and together they raised three chil- dren, Joshua Lee born in 1980, Jessica Lynn born in 1981 and Joseph Charles born in 1984. They lived in Federal Way and Puyallup, Wash., attending Faith Covenant Church in Renton. Kathy was a child care provider for most of her children’s childhood, caring for friends’ children and her nieces. Now adults, the nephews, nieces and her own children still share fond and hilarious memories of growing up in Kathy’s care. When the family moved to Enterprise in 1995, Kathy held several jobs, many of them associated with the child care pro- vider system in Wallowa County. She became a liaison and true advocate for providers as well as parents of children needing care. She worked for the library system and was a member of the Wallowa County Commission on Children and Families. She was “passionate about supporting kids with love and justice.” She became church secretary for Enterprise Christian Church where she was involved in Moms in Touch, leading Sunday School and Women’s Ministries and volunteering to help at many events. She was admitted to St. Luke’s hospital in Boise in Janu- ary 2017 with congestive heart failure and spent the remain- der of the year in a long diffi cult fi ght for healing from multi- ple health issues. Kathy never wavered in her faith or lost the hope and joy that were so evident in her character, even during the long days of pain. She will be missed on this earth by many. Kathy never desired the limelight –– she was simply an ordinary person living a faithful life. A celebration of life will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Enterprise Christian Church. In lieu of fl owers, the family is requesting that memorial gifts be sent to Enterprise Christian Church. Wanted Shoot like a pro with one-on-one photo-coaching. ELECTRICAL jpowell@wallowa.com & PLUMBING SUPPLIES 541•805•9630 STAY WARM Ethel Voss Dec. 9, 1921 –– Nov. 1, 2017 Ethel Voss, the hardworking and devoted matriarch to her large family, passed away peacefully Nov. 1, 2017, at her home in Joseph. Ethel was born at home Dec. 9, 1921, in Linn, Mo., to Maude and Viviane Patterson, a fi rst-generation rancher. Because of her father’s ranching career, Ethel and her fi ve brothers, whom she adored, spent much of their time traveling with their parents between Wyoming in the summer and Missouri in the win- ter. T he children attended school, Maude cooked for the ranch hands and Ethel helped raise her youngest brother “Johnny.” When Ethel was a teenager the family took one last epic journey in a Model T Ford and a two-wheel trailer at 40 miles per hour to Milton Freewater to help Voss out with that year’s pea harvest. During that time, Ethel met Delbert “Bud” Harshfi eld and, unwilling to move with her family again, she quickly married him. Bud, a rancher himself, brought his new bride to Wallowa County where they raised their four children; Carol, Gayle, Jack and Mike. When the children were small, Ethel worked hard cooking for ranch hands, milking cows and keeping her children clean and well-fed. As they grew and school and social activities became more demanding of their time, Ethel convinced Bud to buy a house in Joseph where she and her family spent many happy years. Bud passed in July 1979. After her children were grown, Ethel worked as a maid at the Wallowa Lake Lodge and later in the kitchen at Wallowa Memo- rial Hospital. She remembered her adventures with coworkers fondly throughout her life and often regaled visitors with stories of her escapades and the laughs she shared. In 1982, Ethel married long-time friend Warren Voss and the couple spent the next 20 years traveling around the country see- ing the sights, attending the local Grange and going dancing. The couple enjoyed helping to raise Ethel’s handful of great-grandchildren and their extremely pampered Chihuahua puppy “Pookie,” a time she would look back on fondly. They also spent many summer days camping out on their property along the Little Sheep Creek. Ethel and Warren separated in 2002 and Warren passed away not long after. In recent years, Ethel has lived alone but with a continual stream of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even- tually great-great grandchildren fl owing through it. She contin- ued to travel when possible, play games, watch polka, knit wash- cloths and crochet rag rugs. She loved to laugh, beat the pants off everyone at dominoes and care for her beautiful yard full of fl owers. There was never a moment when she was too busy to have a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll and spend time with her friends and family. She remained fi ercely independent, driving her car and caring for her own home until the end of her life. Although she only attended formal school until the eighth grade, she was wise beyond even her nearly 96 years, always surprising those around her with the depth of her knowledge and understanding. Words cannot express how much she will be missed. She is pre-deceased by her sons: Gayle and Jack Harshfi eld, grandchildren: Jennifer Gibbs, Ryan Zimmer and Jack “Andy” Harshfi eld, her son-in-law Dean Gibbs, her parents and her spouses. She is survived by her children Carol Gibbs-Zollman (Gayle) and Mike Harshfi eld (Pamela), her grandchildren, Terri McCready, Debbie Zimmer, Amy Martinson, Lee Harshfi eld, Michael Harshfi eld and Kristi Downing; great- grandchildren, Melissa Wagoner, Tiffany Zimmer, Jennifer Marshall, Stefanie Compton, Jack Martinson, Finn Martinson, Ryan Harshfi eld, Tyler Harshfi eld, Taylor Harshfi eld, Wyatt Harshfi eld, Brittany Harshfi eld, Austin Downing and CJ Downing; and great-great grandchildren, Alexis Wagoner, London Wagoner, Sonja Wag- oner, Rhilynn Compton and Randon Marshall.
