A18 Sports wallowa.com October 18, 2017 Wallowa County Chieftain Cougars annihilate Cove squad, 66-8 attempts to lead the charge. Ramsden tallied a 55-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a 66-yard run. Ritthaler turned in four tackles and four assists, Ethan Burns four tackles and three assists, Ramsden three tack- les and four assists, Robb three tackles and six assists. Sam Hilliard three tackles and three assists and Brock- amp had 2 tackles and 10 assists to lead the defensive stats. Wallowa had 617 total yards in the game, the best sin- gle-game performance on the season The Cove Leopards turned in 77 total yards and didn’t score their lone touchdown until the fourth quarter. Cove had two fumbles that resulted in turnovers and two interceptions as well as three penalties. It was not the game coach Matt Brockamp had expected. “We were ready for them,” coach Brockamp said. “This was a big win for the program.” Cove was ahead of Wal- lowa and in fi rst place in the league going into the game, Wallowa next faces a ‘mean’ Powder Valley team on Friday By Paul Wahl Wallowa County Chieftain Within the fi rst minutes of Friday’s game against Cove, Wallowa quarterback Gus Ramsden scored two touchdowns. And that was only the beginning. The junior standout was credited with two more touch- downs in the fi rst quarter, one in the second and one in the third as he led the Cougars to a 66-8 win. Ramsden had 208 yards rushing in the game and com- pleted 81 passing yards, a sin- gle-game record. The pass was caught by Joe Robb, who ran the ball for a touchdown and who also turned in three tack- les and six assists on defense. Austin Brockamp added 220 yards rushing on 16 attempts and Patrick Ritthaler 125 yards rushing on nine which Brockamp had earlier said would be an early league title game. With the win, Wallowa moved to 6-1 for the season and Cove fell to 5-2. The Cougars conclude reg- ular season play Friday against Powder Valley (2-4). Coach Brockamp said Powder Valley is “big, mean and nasty” and essentially has nothing to lose. He expects a physical game, which usually plays into Wallowa’s hands. Brockamp said he has seen four fi lms of the team in which they used four differ- ent offenses and a variety of defense strategies, “none of them very good.” Brockamp expects Wal- lowa will face Crane in the opening rounds of post-sea- son play. Paul Wahl/Chieftain Wallowa’s Patrick Ritthal- er tallied 125 yards rush- ing against Cove on Friday night. He also caught an 81-yard pass from quarter- back Gus Ramsden. When the fi eld of battle cleared, the Outlaws 11-man squad walked away from the carnage with a 27-0 victory. “It was a good win for the boys,” coach Rusty Eschler said. “They’re pretty excited.” In a game that the coach called cold and miserable, he said the team played remark- able ball with stellar efforts on both sides of the line, particularly defense. “Coach Magera did a great job getting those guys ready,” Eschler said. The coach noted that the team had to make a number adjustments from playing eight or nine-man football to 11-man. “Some of the kids who played in certain positions got moved around, and we had new $139.95 - BG 50 GAS BLOWER kids on the fi eld,” Eschler said. “Some of our freshmen had to play and stepped up and did very well.” Eschler said that the entire defense was to be congratulated for its efforts. “They only threatened us one time, and that was their opening drive, and after that, we pretty much shut them down,” Eschler said. On offense, Garrett Thorne led the charge with 161 yards rushing and a TD. Jake Coggins had 73 yards rushing and a touchdown. Senior Cole Farwell had 40 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Dylan Marr had 76 yards receiving while Trace Evans hauled 22 yards from the sky. Justus Evan had a touchdown on a 75-yard kickoff return. The win left the Outlaws with a 1-0 league record and 2-2 on the year.
