9A WEDNESDAY September 13, 2017 Cougars fall to Adrian squad, 36-52 By Paul Wahl Wallowa County Chieftain Paul Wahl/Chieftain Grandpa Jeff Barnhart of Post Falls, Idaho, gives last-minute instructions to grandson Tristan just prior to competing in the Fast Ass Express contest Saturday at Hells Canyon Mule Days in Enterprise. MULE DAYS ROUNDUP More than 50 competitors and several hundred spectators packed the Wallowa County Fairgrounds for Hells Canyon Mule Days on Sept. 7-10. Smoky skies cleared in time for Saturday’s parade, and the remainder of the event was accompanied by terrifi c late-summer weather. Paul Wahl/Chieftain Paul Wahl/Chieftain Ginger Daggett slices pork for the barbecue dinner scholar- ship fundraiser Saturday at Hells Canyon Mule Days. In ad- dition to pork, diners were fed large helpings of corn and beans, as well as dinner rolls. Betty Cosgrove of Joseph served dozens of pies to hungry customers Saturday at Hells Canyon Mule Days. The effort was under the direction of Hurricane Creek Grange; howev- er, Betty said she isn’t a Grange member, just a willing vol- unteer. Despite a strong effort in less than perfect conditions, Wallowa High School’s Cougar varsity football team came up on the short end of a 36-52 score against a combined Adrian and Jordan Valley team. The game was played Saturday, moved from Friday because of diffi culty with the lights at Adrian’s fi eld. Quarterback Gus Ramsden led the team with 186 yards passing and 134 yards rush- ing. Patrick Rit- thaler contrib- uted 149 receiving yards. Sam Hilliard was pegged for 37 yards rushing. “Gus had a good game and didn’t slow down Paul Wahl/Chieftain one bit,” said Gus Ramsden, quar- Coach Matt Brock- terback for the Wallowa amp. “He had a High School Cougars, couple nice long led his team with 186 runs.” yards passing and 134 Ramsden had yards rushing against a 73-yard run for Adrian on Saturday. a touchdown in the second quarter and a 54-yard run in for a score in the third. He completed four of nine pass attempts, with two touchdowns. Wallowa drew fi rst blood on an 11-yard run across the goal line for Austin Brockamp. He had a total of 36 yards rushing for the game. The Cougars sat on those eight points until the middle of the second quarter and had boosted the score to 20 by the half. Wallowa added one touchdown in the third and another in the fourth. Brockamp said the fi nal score was a bit misleading as Adrian scored on the last play of the game. “They played good defense against us and we gave them a short fi eld three times fi rst- half,” Brockamp said. The Wallowa squad was coming off what the coach referred to as a tough week, having to practice indoors in t-shirts because of poor air quality from nearby wildfi res. Air tempera- tures were in the mid-90s at game time, which had several players vomiting on the sidelines and pulling shoulder pads to stay cool. Next up Brockamp said he believes with a full week of outdoor practice in full gear, his team should be ready to face Sherman County at 4 p.m. Fri- day at Powder Valley. Both are 1-1 so far. “They are big ... I mean really big, and they have a talented quarterback,” said Brockamp. “Sherman is probably the biggest team on our schedule, perhaps the biggest in the state.” Two Sherman players weigh in at nearly 300 pounds each. Another four players are listed in the 200-plus category.
