O BITUARIES
William L. (Bill) Bailey
Aug. 10, 1916 –– Sept. 2, 2017
William Bailey died peacefully Sept. 2, 2017, at Angeline
Senior Living in La Grade, surrounded by his family. He had
recently celebrated his 101st birthday Aug. 10 eating choco-
late cake and enjoying his family.
Bill was born Aug. 10, 1916, in John Day, Ore., to Harry
and Mayme (Yokom) Bailey. He grew up on a ranch near Mt.
Vernon, Ore. He had a sister, Lola, of John Day, with whom
he had a close relationship.
He married Cecil Mae (Cec) McKern in Lewiston, Idaho,
in 1939. They moved to Golden, Idaho where he worked in a
railroad shop.
When World War II began, he thought he would be called
up, so he wanted to move Cec closer to home. They moved to
Hines, Ore., where he worked in a sawmill.
Next they moved to Seneca, Ore., and he and brother-in-
law Ernie Coots hauled logs for Hines Lumber Co. Later,
Ernie started a logging company, and Bill went to work for
him hauling logs around Roseburg and Lakeview.
Around 1947, Bill, Cec, Ernie, Dorothy and Lana Coots
moved to Joseph where Bill continued to log for Ernie. Around
1953 Ernie bought a ranch at Imnaha. When he passed away
in 1965, Bill ran the ranch for Dorothy until it was sold in
1996.
Bill and Cec lost two sons at birth, but their niece, Lana,
was like their own child. They were married 62 years when
Cec passed away in 2001.
Bill was a member of the Elks and Masonic lodges, a Shri-
ner and member of Oregon Cattlemen’s Association. He was
honored as cattleman of the year in 1973.
He also loved to hunt and fi sh and probably got more than
his limit on most occasions. He liked vacationing, picnicking
and mushrooming with his family. He loved gardening and
had a wonderful raspberry patch and grew cherries.
Bill is survived by his niece, Lana (J.R.) of enterprise;
another niece, Connie (Bruce) of Albany, Ore.; a nephew
Jeff (Kelly) of Albany; great nieces, Andrea (Tony) and Amy
of Enterprise; Great nieces and nephews, Julie, Dennis and
Kevin of California and numerous others.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, sister
Lola and nephew Merlyn Black.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Sept. 19 at Joseph Methodist
Church. A luncheon will follow at the church.
Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

House Aug. 31, 2017, in Eugene. He was 76.

Ore.); children, Chris (Port-
land) and Andy (Canby,

ald Barr (Enterprise).

Calif., to Clark David Barr
and Lula Belle Barr. He
grew up in Union County Barr
and graduated from Union
High School in 1959. He then attended Eastern Oregon Col-
lege, and pursued his love of sports, playing football for the
Mountaineers.
While in college, he married Wallowa native Berdiene
Landis in 1963. In 1964, Rich graduated from with a bach-
elor’s degree in education and later received his master’s
degree from the University of Oregon.
After moving to Springfi eld in 1964, Rich (known to most
of his colleagues as “Dick”) began working for Springfi eld
Public Schools as an elementary teacher at Douglas Gardens
Elementary School. Five years later, he transitioned to admin-
istration, fi rst working at Thurston Middle School as an assis-
tant principal.
Continuing in his profession, he then became an elemen-
tary school principal, serving several schools in the Spring-
fi eld School District. Rich retired in 1995 after 31 years as an
educator. He absolutely loved his career, and it was a continu-
ing source of pride and satisfaction throughout the course of
his life.
Rich and Berdiene had two sons and raised them in Spring-
fi eld. His children knew him as a caring father who tirelessly
supported their interests and cultivated in them a respect for
others and an appreciation for hard work.
“Be kind, and good, and do your best,” were the words he
often used to encourage them before they set out for the day.
He rarely missed attending any of their performances or
sports contests and delighted in their achievements.
In 2003, Rich and Berdiene moved back to Eastern Ore-
gon, living in Enterprise for 12 years. A decline in health
eventually prompted a move back to Springfi eld in 2015.
Rich was passionate about the outdoors and shared his
love of camping, backpacking, canoing, and traveling with his
family and friends. He kept a deeply spiritual connection with
nature and often expressed his recognition of the Divine in the
wild places he held dear.
