Join Oregon artist and hand embroiderer Nichole Alvarado as she demon- strates five traditional stitches, all of which may be used to embellish a garment you’ve brought along –– no needle and thread expe- rience necessary. Students will learn back, split, satin and stem stitch as well as French knot. Choose your embellishment from three small designs or create your own. Bring a nonstretch garment to embroider; cotton, linen and denim work well. All other materials are included and students will go home with a small embroidery stitch sampler, two needles and a four-inch wooden embroidery hoop, as well as enough embroidery floss to complete your piece at home. Fee: $58. New Old Time Chautauqua: Noon down- town Enterprise. Live performances, commu- nity events and arts education by volunteer performers. Celebratory parade begins noon at Enterprise High School, ending at the Wal- lowa County Courthouse. Free workshops 12:30-2:30 p.m. Vaudeville extravaganza 7 p.m. at OK Theatre with live music, juggling, acrobatics, dance, magic, mime and more. Using her organic indigo dye vat, Adriana Moreno will introduce the basics of Japa- nese Shibori and demonstrate a variety of folding, wrapping, binding and knotting tech- niques to create resist patterns on cotton cloth. Learn how to prepare the indigo dye bath and several Shibori techniques, as well as some Furoshiki methods for wrapping a gift or preparing a picnic bundle. Every year wheat farmer Erl McLaugh- lin opens the huge doors on his showroom to share a truly awe-inspiring collection of 100 tractors, plows, cultivators and other antique machinery from the early 1900s. Meet at Wallowlogy. Preregistration required. Call 541-263-1663. Leo Beard, 97, passed away July 13, 2017 at his home in Asotin Creek, Wash. Leo was born Dec. 28, 1919, near Paradise, Ore., to Len and Ina (Varney) Beard. He was the sixth of seven chil- dren. Siblings were Geor- gia Estes, Frank, Orpha Rei- man, Ralph, Mable Warnsley and Leonard. All are deceased except for Leonard. The family lived on Joseph Creek 1906-1942, and the children attended Deer Creek Leo Beard School near Paradise. In 1941, Leo married Leita Swisher. They logged and ranched in Asotin and Wallowa counties for many years. Two daughters were born to them: Carolyn (Cutler) and Sharon Bloodsworth. Carolyn passed away in 2008. Leo is survived by his wife of 76 years; his daughter, Sha- ron and Lew Bloodsworth; three grandsons, Richard “Spanky” Bloodsworth, Karl (Richel) Bloodsworth and Wade (Debbie) Bloodsworth; great-grandchildren Britanie, Brandy, Levi, Sidney and Cody Bloodsworth; son-in-law Leroy Cutler; step-grandson Michael Cutler; and devoted caretaker Lisa Snodderly. Her two-year-old son survived the wreck without injuries. Effi e’s Celebration of Life will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Wallowa High School. Effi e was born in Portland June 28, 1995, at 12:15 am. She was then adopted Aug. 7, 1998, with her older sister Effie Burns Angela to her parents Robert and Audra Burns. Effi e’s interests as she grew older were horses, outdoors, sports and music. She participated in 4-H with her horse and also loved to ride bareback at home. When the outdoors called her name, she would ride four-wheelers, go camping, hike the moun- tains, fl oat the river and shoot her gun all while enjoying the com- pany of her family. Effi e enjoyed playing sports with her older sister, which included basketball and softball. She also participated in volley- ball. She was active in all aspects of the band and played the clar- inet. She then later taught herself to play the guitar. She enjoyed writing her own music and performing for her family. Shortly after high school, she met the love of her life, Joe Starner, and created a new life with him. The following year they were blessed with the news of their family extending. Jameson Drew Starner was then born July 9, 2015. Effi e is survived by her father and mother, Robert Burns and Audra (Jim) Allen; older sister Angela (Shea) Swedin and two nephews; younger brother Gabriel Burns, all residing in Wal- lowa. Also survived by her signifi cant other Joe Starner and son Jameson Starner residing in Welches, Ore. A Gofundme account has been established in memory of Effi e to cover all unexpected expenses. During a recent cheerleading camp in Pullman, Washington, Collier, 17, was selected for the All-American Award. As a result of the award, Collier was invited to cheer in London, England for the World’s Day parade on New Year’s Day. Collier, who has participated in competitive cheerleading most of her life, also won a cheerleading slot at next week’s East-West Shrine All-Star football game to be played in Baker City.
